I just got this thing from new egg 2 weeks ago and have been loving every minute of it....except...the damn keyboard suddenly stopped working.

This happened to me about a week after I bought it seemingly out of nowhere and then fixed itself about a half hour later. I thought it was just some anomaly. Well it happened again today and it still hasn't recovered despite several restarts and uninstalling of drivers. The problem appears to be software related as the keys work fine before Vista loads.

I called MSi and the dude told me to try the recovery cd and if that didn't work to send it back. I feel that this should be easier to fix then that. The last thing I want to do is ship this back. I have read a lot of forums and keyboard problems don't seem uncommon.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? The touch keys all work but I'm unsure if the touchpad works as it was deactivated and now I can't use the keyboard to reactivate it. Help is appreciated.

Hey there, and welcome to NBR omega!

Well we can confirm if its software or not with a few simple steps.

Sooo, go to the start (orb) and in the search bar thing type msconfig.

From there you should see general with 3 select circles, you will want diagnostic startup (this basically stops all software associated loads and so on)

When selected, apply and reboot, then see if your keyboard is acting up still, if not, we will probably need to reinstall SCM (system control manager) and if so its probably hardware associated as far as i can think of, i have seen this come up in the forum before though.

Thanks for the reply, however do you know where I can locate msconfig in Vista as I cannot type anything in to search for it. I know where it is on XP but it doesn't appear to be the same on Vista. Thanks.

This is vista my friend, you can just type it in that search bar as it also acts as say a run box, like on my picture number 1, look ontop of the glass orb in bottom right, it says msconfig over it, just click in the search box and type msconfig

hit enter, and it should pop up.

If you need any more help finding it, i will put up step by step pictures on how to get there, but i think you should get along ok :D

Yeah I have used msconfig numerous times in the past. My problem is that I can't use my keyboard at all in Vista. Nothing on the keyboard works. I want to know how I can find msconfig without having to type anything AKA windows explorer. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Sorry omega, i am stupid...stabby has a good point though.

Try start > all programs >accessories > ease of access > on screen keyboard, you should be able to use that.

Hmm never even realized there was an onboard keyboard. Good to know. Anyway I tried the diagnostic boot and the problem persists. I'm going with a fresh Vista install. If that doesn't work I will have the RMA it I suppose. Thank you guys.

I remember the 1651 barebones having a similar problem like this, a firmware update fixed it. Please keep me updated when you get the problem fixed..
