Dragon Center update possible?

I have a GT73VR 7RE running Dragon Center v1.2.1705.3101 which, in terms of keyboard LED control, is absolutely useless. When I first received this machine 2 days ago it had a very different Dragon Center installed which gave full lighting control over each individual key and allowed you to change the speed of lighting FX. Unfortunately, I had to reinstall Windows to get rid of the previous owner's profile and since then the Dragon Center that was reinstalled is this piece of junk.

I can see no option for updating drivers and MSI software within the PC so I am asking you more experienced guys how I can get an improved version of this Dragon Center and update my other drivers as the recovery USB that came with the machine is almost 3 years old?

 

To be honest its not possible to have a per key light control on gt73 since it has 3 zone rgb keyboard. Im running dragon center 2.6.2005.0601 and its not really worth it since it has only overcloking options, fan speed and so on... I have msi gt73vr 7re. Since you got yours as a used one probobly the previous owner did some modes to it. I dt think so that he swapped perkey rgb keyboard since it has different connectors and it will not work on gt73. But maybe he wrote some script or did some mode to the software thats why it was working different. Just in case here is screenshots from dragon center 2 from the internet

That interface doesn't look anything like mine. The one I have is really basic. If I install that, will it at least give me control over FX speed so I can speed up the wave effect? The Steelseries software doesn't do anything if you are not using the PC to play games with.

I'm really sorry my friend but I cannot understand anything you said.

FN +1, 2, or 3 do nothing. The Steelseries app gives me no control over the lighting FX. I cannot find steel hwkey, probably because I don't know what it is. And the only keyboard profiles I can create have to be associated with games. As I do not play games, or very rarely, I doubt I will ever need to create a profile.

 

To be honest best way is to contact the previous owner and ask him about mods or modifications that he did to the laptop. I tryed to find mods for RGB lights but no luck since its a 3 zone rgb. Per-key lights will not work on GT73.

 

I can't. I bought it from a reseller so European law prevents him from providing details of the person he purchased it from.

 

The per-key RGB actually worked? As a former GT73VR owner that sounds pretty surprising as the laptop isn't supposed to have that functionality.

You can check fo GT73VR 7RE drivers/software on MSI's site here. I can already see that Dragon Center 1.2.1910.3101 is available for download.

I would re-download Steelseries Engine and everything from there.

I don't know if it worked. Other than opening the interface and seeing what options were available, I never actually got to use it because I bricked the registry which then required a Windows reinstall from the recovery drive.

One thing we need to be clear about is that each key is able to display all the available RGB colours. So, if you have the FX set to a wave, the effect will run across the entire keyboard. These 2 points indicate that the limiting factor is not the keyboard. It's the software used to define how it is used. In other words, if earlier software just split the keyboard into 3 main zones, then that limitation came only from the software.

Case in point:
My main laptop is an Alienware and I have owned Alienwares since 2009. On the old 2009-2011 models they too were divided into 3 lighting zones. After that, they divided them into 4 zones. Today, each individual key is programmable or you can set however many zones you desire if you want to save time or you lack creativity. From 2012 until 2015, for some unknown reason, Dell's AlienFX software programmers decided to remove the colour white from the palette. This upset many owners although there was a workaround if you knew how to exploit it. Again, what this shows is that the keyboards always had these options but users were being deprived of them by sloppy software design.

The latest Steelseries Engine is GG3.0.0, whatever that means? Checking file properties provides no details whatsoever on which genuine build version is being offered, and that's annoying because, as NeXt3R pointed out, he has found a 3.20 version and on the MSI site, there's a 3.17 version available. Theoretically, unless there are betas in circulation, the GG3.0.0 official download should be the latest version.

It seems clear to me that I need to install Macrium Reflect prior to trying anything that might break the system. I will do that this weekend.

You put so much time and effort into your replies that I truly wish I could understand what you are saying. Unfortunately, your method of writing is such that you never type complete sentences and instead you tend to just insert keywords, almost as though you were tweeting in SMS language. For people who know the MSI range it may be they understand you. Regretfully, this is my first MSI so I don't.

What is this HWkey you keep mentioning?
Where is it on the keyboard (I cannot see it)?
What does it do?
What are TEMPLES (other than places for prayer)?

At the top left of my keyboard, just under the ESC key is a large key with the number '2' on it. If I press it, nothing happens. If I look in the manual, the key shows as '1' and there is no info about what it does. It took me 2 days to discover that the Home key was not defective, it just requires that FN is pressed at the same time. Why? What is the point in that? I have never had a single PC or separate keyboard that required FN to be used in order to activate the Home key!

Anyway, the screenshots you showed are what I need. Can you provide download links for that software and is it Dragon Center or Steelseries, please?

When I said "The Steelseries site only provides GG3.0.0.", I was talking about the Windows version. They are offering a 3.2.0 version for Mac's but that is of no use to MSI users.

There are only 2 versions available: The GG3.0.0 for Windows and the 3.2.0 for Mac. If you say I must not use the GG version, what am I supposed to do?

HWkey / Native key / SS icon ... I don't have a clue what you are talking about. Are these all found in the Steelseries software?
And how do you repair a key that doesn't work?

To make sure I do not damage anything I will install Macrium Reflect this weekend (Windows System Restore is extremely unreliable). Then I will install the 3.2.0 software you just provided. I will of course let you know how it goes.

I do not trust System Restore. It has never worked for me in the past. It always said "Windows was unable to restore your files. No changes have been made to your system." At least with Reflect I risk absolutely nothing.

I can't use Teamviewer after being falsely accused of not using it for personal use. I will have to read the topic on MSI drivers.

Oh well, the Steelseries v3.2.0 update killed the keyboard completely. It never lit up and the software said it was disconnected. I took your advice and created a restore point so Windows is now in the process of attempting a restore. I hope it works!

This is not true at all, it can be a hardware limitation. There are laptops today being sold with the configurator options of either zone-based lighting or upgrades to per-key RGB keyboards.

 

You are probably right. I was trying to be logical given the lighting behaviour.

 

It took hours to restore and although Windows claimed to have restored successfully, it was a disaster. The keyboard no longer worked at all and the Killer networking driver had corrupted.

FYI, before installing v3.2.0 I uninstalled v3.1.1 using Revo Uninstaller Pro.
Anyway, after the recovery failure, I uninstalled it again and installed v3.1.7. That worked and my keyboard came back to life. Then it gave me a notification that the 3.2.0 update was available so I allowed it to auto-install. It works.
There is no speed control so I remain very unimpressed with the Steelseries keyboard FX and software. I mean, if you configure it on wave, the time taken to cross the keyboard is about equal to watching the grass grow! But I am aware that the same thing does not apply to the GT76 which appears to be fully configurable and its wave effect moves fast and fluidly.

I have tried all red. It's ok but it is a bit dark. All white would have been preferable however this keyboard does not appear to be capable of producing white. It gives a light yellow. The lighting around the touchpad cannot match the theoretical white of the keys. Instead it appears as a dirty yellow (a cross between yellow and brown). I tried modifying that but it doesn't change.

I will check the key macros later. First I need to setup Outlook so that it mirrors the content of my Alienware. It may sound surprising but that's a massive job which I cannot even begin until I find a solution to a problem I'm having with Outlook on the Alienware.

No, it's not the brightness that is causing it. The colours simply don't work when you want white. I even set it manually to 255, 255, 255 but it still appears yellow.

As you probably know, the v3.2.0 interface does have a manual option for altering the speed but, on my GT73VR that option is greyed out.

 

The software is not the problem in ur case the yellow(white) lights on the keybord is the sign that led light is corrupted, its just old. If you want clean and strong RGB light you need to change the keyboard. But dt know if its worth it coz you need to ripped the whole laptop apart

 

here it is better to buy a new case + and transfer everything

I have an Alienware I bought in 2009 which has perfect white lighting so what makes you think 2.5 years is too old?

 

Between the GT70, GT72, GT73, and GT76, I'd never owned an MSI that was able to produce perfect white lighting. For some reason they can't get it right.

 

When buying LED light bulbs, you get the choice of warm or cool. Warm has a yellowish tint while cool has a slight bluish tint to it. You can also see this difference in modern headlamps. I found that I could improve the keyboard whiteness by adding a hint of blue (249, 255, 255). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for the touchpad surround though.
