Hey Guys, I recently aquired a an MSI GT72S 6QF-061 4K. I am trying to find out if my unit includes the G Sync as part of the 4K IPS option. Some of what I have found says yes and some makes no mention other than a 17.3 UHD IPS Level 100% Adobe RGB which is an option

My model has the 6820HK w 980 GTX 8GB, 16GB DDR4 2133, 2 x 128 GB nvme in Super Raid 0 w 1TB hgst. Its a great unit and I return to having the option of using the 530 gpu and have access to a BR burner. The GT73 looked more modern with the lighting accents but the GT72S is pretty sweet itself just a bit older and not as strong.

Bone stock it produced some nice figures

I haven't looked up your laptop, but have you opened Nvidia Control Panel and checked your see if G-sync was either already active, or available to activate with a checkbox? Mine was active already. I've heard if it's greyed out or otherwise not clickable then either your panel or card isn't capable. Naturally it's harder to find out before you buy a laptop but since you have it, this should tell you for sure. Hope this helps!
So, tell me how you like that 4k screen?? I chose not to upgrade my screen cause people were saying it's overkill on anything under 24 or 32 inches. I also wasn't sure a 1070 could push 4k gaming without putting quality settings at low. I can still buy a 4k panel for $100 if I want.

The unit overall is good, the 4K screen now that I have in comparison to my GT73VR 7RE Titan screen which was an IPS 120hz pane. is nice. I realize the 980 8GB is not going to be able to push 4K modern games at its native resolution with high settings. However when using the laptop the default font settings are recommended nd set to 250% so in essence the screen really looks almost identical to 1080P FHD , what I do notice is the colour reproduction is excellent and the sharpness is better, it is really a nice screen. Had I been buying new I probably would have passed on this as an option but buying it used and getting it as a bonus I am quite happy with it. The GT73 VR was the better unit a tad more modern looking with some of the accents but this GT72S produced some awesome synthetic benchmark numbers and using it day to day I notice no difference between the two. For the games I play this unit will suffice for a while, no problem at all there

I just looked in control panel after updating driver and I can only seem to see 60hz refresh so I am assuming that the 4k panel does not come with G sync from what I can tell. But I game out to a Omen 32" which is freesync anyways so it does not really matter and gaming on the unit itself is great, no complaints, for $100 I would give the panel a shot

Great!!!! This is good news and I am going to save up for a 4K panel. Thanks for the comparison and info on that -- it's good to hear that everything scales up appropriately too.

Welcome back to the GT72s club bud. Just remember you'll be able to use a GTX1070 in that system OP.

Yes, I think I was in contact with you before when I had my GT72 2QE before I traded up inquiring on the swap. I may even watch for a used 1070 GTX to eventually replace the 980. For now will just use as is. BTW how much is involved in the swap and what is one looking at roughly cost wise.

Right now I want to upgrade the RAM, anyone know off hand what the GT72E shipped w to start? I know it is 2133 DDR4 but nothing more than that. Guess cpuz would tell me as well.

Last I think I should replace the factory thermal paste on CPU and GPU. I noticed the unit has never been opened up as it still has the center screw sticker on bottom. Looking forward to the holidays and some time to tinker
    Cheers

@cisco kidd, So your only needing to get the Two Piece Heat sink for the GPU, for a GTX 1070 from a GT72VR-6RE and a GTX 1070 MXM card from MSI Version 1.2 might be a good idea.
You have seen the video i made for that and its the same no modding is required to the heat sink as you have now a Skylake Series GT72 so you basically follow my Video and your golden.

As for RAM use CPU-Z it will tell you what RAM you have under the SPD tab or AIDA64 Under main board and the SPD tab.

MIne was SK hynix HMA41GS6AFR8N-TF (DDR4-2133 (1066 MHz)) so when i upgraded to 32GB from 16GB i used the same ram. Although hindsight would of had me remove all ram sicks and getting 2400 or 2666 speed ram.

As for CPU and GPU thermal paste if the temps are OK no higher then 85c the leave as is or replace.
Also myself and j95 have been modding the Realtek Drivers to support Nahimic 3 on older Nahimic 2 Systems. That is also in this forum area.

Lastly yes it was me you contacted on youtube then on here.

I've been seeing prices around the $800 mark for MXM 1070 cards, new of course. You may get lucky and find someone who is upgrading and get a deal. http://www.eurocom.com/ec/upgrade(2,344,0)MSI_GT72 has full price lists on all the hardware you would need for the upgrade, and they even offer to do it for you if you ship it to them, but that's more money. Sounds like you got yourself a very solid computer - congratulations! I saw in a few places on this forum that my GT73 uses re-branded Kingston value ram, as some people have had problems with other brands. I can't say what's in yours but as hacktrix2006 said it's not hard to find out. Good hunting!
