Does anyone have either GE620 or GE620DX?

Hi, I'm considering buying a GE620DX and was wondering if anyone here had one and could comment on a couple things. I'm mainly concerned about the screen and heat. How does the 1920x1080 screen look? And how is the overall build quality?

Well if they use the same panel as their other series then it's a decent panel.

I have the GE620DX with the i5-2410M. I got it a few days ago and until now i'm quite pleased with it. When gaming the CPU didn't go over 91C and 93C for the GPU(overclocked to 700Mhz core, 1400Mhz shaders and 950Mhz memory).
When it comes to build quality it seems alright, plastic everywhere but it doesn't crack if you push down on the palmrest area. I like the keyboard also. The flex is minimal and it happens only if you put a lot of pressure on the keys.
The screen is very crisp and has good viewing angles.

I am using the GE620DX model with i7.

The screen is beautiful, but keep in mind that I am not a professional and have never really had expensive screens. It's much better than my external Asus VE236H, though. Very sharp and lots of screen real estate. A pleasure to work on.

With regard to heat: the fan is always on, but you do not really hear it at its lowest setting. When not gaming, the air coming from the vents is cool to lukewarm to the touch. When gaming, the air is very hot and the fan noise is noticeable, but it's not overbearing. That said, the palm rests do not get hot during gaming and the machine has not yet crashed once.

I am very happy with the purchase.

The only major problem I have with it is the touchpad. The supplied drivers are very bad. Currently downloading Synaptics Gesture Suite to see if it's better.

Not really, the i7-2630QM will probably get close to 100C.

It's DDR3. The GPU is the crippled one with 128 bit interface and 16 ROPs but still 144 shaders.

The cooler in that model might be better then.

Thanks for your answer. So the 3dmark 06 will go in the 10k ish, right? If you have time, would you please run it @default res?

Gratz on your new laptop, I'm planning to get the same one here.

The middle of the keyboard and the touchpad area are the ones that can get a bit hot when gaming. As I said i'm reaching a bit over 90C for both the GPU and CPU when playing games.

The build quality seems fine to me. It's the first laptop that I've bought so I don't have anything to compare it to.

The cooler seems to be active all the time but it's quite silent when you're just browsing the web or watching a video. It gets a bit loud in games but nothing unbearable.

One thing that I find annoying is that in order to use some of the buttons that are above the keyboard you need to have the s-bar application installed and running. The DDVD-RW doesn't have a button, you get one above the keyboard that only works while the s-bar is running. The button does work during POST though.

No, the 620 is an optimus notebook so you cant, you have to install the nvidia drivers from Msi website for optimus to work, and then set in the nvidia control panel which card is used for which application.

Who else has overclocked their 555m? I've reached 800/1600/1000 with a cooling pad at 75-80C

    Someone mentioned WEI so..
Processor (i have an i3 version hence the lowness) 6.4
    RAM 5.9
    Aero Graphics 4.6
    Gaming Graphics 6.8
    HDD 5.9

Not really sure where to begin with this laptop.
I have had nothing but issues with this computer and MSI has done absolutely nothing to help. About 2 months after purchasing this computer from Newegg, I started to get a LOT of blue screens. And by a lot I mean, more than 1 per hour. I had no choice but to contact MSI tech support. I convinced them that the computer needed repairs and sent it off to their center in California for RMA. From what I could tell from the very little information I got about the repair, they replaced the RAM and sent it back to me (of course this took about 2 weeks).

After these repairs the computer lasted for about 3 weeks before it completely failed. The computer crashed mid-use and upon a reboot the hard-drive made the dreaded clicking noise, indicating a mechanical failure. I went through the RMA process again, enduring another 2 weeks without a computer. Again, what little information I got about the repair indicated that only the HDD had been replaced.

After receiving my computer after the 2nd RMA it worked for another 3 weeks or so before it completely failed once more. Again, mid-use the computer crashed. This time, the computer didn't even get to the BIOS. It turned itself on and off endlessly unless I held the power button down. I contacted MSI about yet ANOTHER RMA and insisted that the unit needed to be replaced, not repaired. They ignored this plea, but the technician said he would contact me personally when they received the laptop. This was a complete lie. I called MSI after they had received my computer and they made no indication

that this was even a possibility and also refused to let me speak directly to a repair technician. They even refused to give me the status of my repair, so I have no idea when my computer will even be fixed.

The icing on this terrible cake occurred yesterday when a customer service agent promised me that my computer would be overnighted to me after repairs. I emailed them today to confirm this and they said that it was not an option. I have been lied to on more than one occasion by this company and have had to spend nearly 6 weeks without a personal computer. They make inferior products and their customer service is absolutely horrendous.

Avoid this computer at all costs (and any other MSI products for that matter).

I'm actually under the impression that MSIs low end products like the ge series are not manufactured by them but another 3rd party manufacturer like Compal or Wistron.

Other MSI products tend to be pretty reliable since the gx660 and I think we would know since most everyone in this forum section owns a GT or GX series.

Are you sure it's not the seller that's unreliable? So far the only problems I've had was BSODs from sloppy gpu driver installs. But otherwise no hardware problems to report really. Though, my laptop came with the disk from a GE620 which apparently a completely different touchpad so had to DL off msi's site. Plus all the annoying stickers. Still, you get a lot for the price.

Though all your RMAs up there could be explained by a dying HDD from the start. Maybe they gave you a refurbished model?

Never deal with a company directly. Always go through your retailer.
