    hi all,
my msi x410 has had a bumpy/bubbly/lumpy/curved keyboard since day 1, what i mean is some groups of keys are higher than others and dont seem to be connected properly to the membrane below, they have empty space under them and are obviously not as flat as other keys.

seems like botched build quality to me, or is this common for slim laptop keyboards ?

It's the same on my X-320 and X-340 (first models, supposedly fixed on later models). I've gotten used to it, but it definitely gave me some concern at first.

Really love the slim design, though, so small price to pay, I guess.

    thanx for repl,
i agree, its causing me some concern, to the point of returning it, so many keys are floating above the membrane and so many keys move in a block around a single key press im wondering that longer term, i may have difficulty registering key presses at all, so nows the time to get rid.

ive never encountered this kind of poor quality keyboard before and it ruins a good looking laptop on the whole, shame.

I felt the same...a big flaw in an otherwise stellar notebook. I kept mine and am OK with it now. But I agree that you should return it if not comfortable with it and get something you like better. Their newer models supposedly do not have this problem. I guess they heard a lot of complaints. ;)

can i ask how long you have had yours and is every key still responsive and accurate ?
is this problem merely cosmetic or will it result in errors whilst typing in later months ?
i know a crystal ball may be needed to answer the latter, but ive only had mine for 9days.
    cheers

About 2 1/2 to 3 months. I don't think there are any reliability issues (of course, only time will tell). When I first got mine, I was very disappointed in the keyboard. Now, I don't think about it too much at all. I've just gotten used to it. It's still a flaw, but I've accepted it. It does not affect my typing or enjoyment of this nifty little "super" netbook.

I have the X400 (owned less than 1 month) and have similar keyboard issues to yours. I think that the keyboard has double-sided tape on the bottom (not uncommon on laptops), but the tape on mine is loose on the right side so that when you press on the "o" or "k" keys, for example, a whole bunch of other keys move too (extreme keyboard flex).

I worry about keyboard reliability. I am glad that I have a 3-year warranty.

actually bang on there about the tape i think ?, also its the right side of my keyboard also that is worse, with extreme 'flex'.

i noticed that pressing firmly on a bunch of raised keys can sometimes stick em down to correct position, but after a while they are back up and lose again.

i wonder about dismantling and fixing with double sided tape ?,if its possible im gonna try it, but i suppose getting the keyboard out is one hell of a job.

i can not believe a recent series of laptops has such a terrible and inelegant keyboard fixing issue.

apart from this issue i like the laptop, but the 'floating' keys are a constant dissapointment and worry.

if only argos had em in stock (they never seem to stock em,it was a fluke they had one in when i got it), i would get it changed for another (and this time i would view it on premises to ensure a decent keyboard).eleven days since i got mine and still none in any argos in the whole county.

I thought about dismantling the X400 to get at the keyboard, to increase the ram, and to see about re-applying thermal paste between the cpu/heatsink. I have not found a service manual for the X400, but on the MSI-hosted user forum at http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php there are service manuals for the similar X320 and X340.

It appears to be quite a task just to remove the keyboard. This does not phase me too much, as I have disassembled laptops a few times, but...on my laptop there is a sticker blocking one of the screws that needs to be unscrewed to remove the keyboard that says "removing this sticker voids your warranty."

It is perplexing why the keyboard is so terrible--not just the flimsiness but also the truncated keys on the right side, especially the small right shift key. There is plenty of room on the X400 to put 100% full-size keys, but I think it was a money-saving thing to put the same keyboard in the X400 as the smaller X320/X340.
