I've now owned and returned both an MSI GT60 0NE-220US and a Clevo P150EM. I had faulty keyboards on both of them right out of the box and thus they went back.

MSI had a great build quality, though it was a bit glossy and flashy. The SteelSeries keyboard was stiff and the Windows key was on the wrong side. The keyboard was so stiff that the slight lessening of finger pressure would let up the key so it did not make contact. This caused issues in games and was the reason it was returned.

The Clevo is a bit lighter and the matte rubber finish was great. The keyboard seemed to miss keypresses and my Tab key never worked without deliberately pressing too hard directly in the center of the key. I did not like the sharp edges around the keyboard and trackpad, this was a poor design for comfortable extended gaming. The main issues is that the power button broke and became stuck in, the only way to turn it on was to remove the power cord and battery.

Now to the question: Is my experience with the MSI (and Clevo since the keyboards are made by the same company) a fluke or is these series laptop truly plagued with bad keyboards as I have been reading? The minority can often be very vocal, so I'd like to hear from folks with no issues and love the GT60 SteelSeries keyboard.

I have the gt70 and have no problems. The windows key is like that deliberately.

I personally like the stiffness of the keyboard on my MSI GE60. At first it was a bit strange, but it only took a few days to get used to it, so I would definitely not consider it as a defect either.

The Clevo ones have quality and serious ghosting issues though, so even if I bought a Clevo machine I'd get it with an MSI keyboard modded in it.

I think it depends on the batch/lot your keyboard came from, as well as your typing style.

Some folks report no problems at all. Some folks (like me for example) have had to return a unit because it was simply unusable, and even with the a replacement unit, quite a few keystrokes get missed. Just in typing this post, I have had to go back and correct 2-3 typos caused by missing keystrokes.

There are several threads dedicated to this issue, including:
