I am looking for a laptop for work and I want to know few things about MSI's that I couldn't find online. I am interested in either GS7x or GE7x models. I like PE series but in US I couldn't find one with IPS screen.

1- Can I disable the discrete GPU from BIOS ? If I disable the GPU (from BIOS or OS) can still use display ports ? (in other words can display ports used by intel integrated graphics or hardwired to discrete GPU). I am aware that this is the opposite of what majority wants.

2- Any comment on noise level of different models ? in particular GS vs GE series.

In particular any suggestion of MSI for my needs is appreciated. I need a 17 inch display + a decent CPU and preferably quiet machine and less or around 6lbs. I got a Thinkpad P70 recently but I am returning it because it has issues with linux and it is heavy 7.6lbs.

    1. No, it's using Optimus. However the external output is directly linked to the dGPU.
    2. GS & GE have about the same noise levels.

I can tell you for my GE60 2OE which is getting old now runs muxless with Optimus and output to all displays just using the integrated graphics with discrete graphics disabled. I cannot remember if disabling discrete graphics was an option in the standard BIOS or not.

FWIW the integrated graphics generates a lot higher temperature per Watt than cores for my 4700MQ, whether that's the same for other CPU's idk but if so does mean higher fan speed for heavy graphics usage which of course means more noise.

With a vanilla MSI BIOS - I doubt it.

You may be able to do it with one of Svet's modified BIOSes. When my dGPU failed, I was able to disable it to use just the iGPU. This saved on fan noise.

But that said, why pay the extra money for a dGPU when you don't want it/won't use it?
