Anybody know what the difference is between these two laptops? Or is the GS72 just an updated version of the GS70?

Basically, yes. It's a revision to that series, much like the GE60 and GE70 are now the GE62 and GE72, respectively.

They basically have about the same specs as the GS70. There is a minor change to the lid, where the GS72 has a couple ridges on it and isn't just completely flat. Also, there is a GS72 that has a 4K screen on it that the GS70 didn't have that option in the past. But mostly they are the same though.

Another minor changed is the wireless card, the GS72 comes with Killer Wireless-AC 1535 and GS70 comes with 1525.

Does MSI GS72 have overheat and throttling issue like GS70?

It should be fine as long as you keep it clean on the inside. A repaste with a good compound helps, too.

It can still happen depends on the visual settings in the game, if your system is getting good heat dissipation or not, room is cooled or not, etc.
