Laptop mag made a nice and detailed review of the MSI Wind
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/msi-wind.aspx
5 hours of battery life!
-
The Atom on MSi can be overclocked to 1.9... Lookin' good.
-
Looks great. Can't wait for the $399 Linux version! =)
-
$499 with XP and 6 cell battery. That's the one I want.
Can't decide between black or white though. I heard the white shows fingerprints much less... But black is always slick looking. -
-
do you know where we can order these in the US when they are released? The black xp version will be mine.

Looks nice, I may be able to get the linux version for cheaper then MSRP though.
-
yeah, can't decide between black/white - both look slick! Where can we buy these from? (XP version)

I decided to go for the white one. I believe the white has a more beautiful finish. -
Then again, white devices can get pretty nasty looking over time.
It's hard to decide. -
It said in one of the reviews that the white one did not suffer from fingerprints much.
Also I've asked MSI S262 how their laptop stays white overtime. They say it does not discolor. -
where can we pre order?!?!?
-
Thinking of ordering too while I wait for a Sony TZ with the Montevina ULV (hopefully September/October).
No 3G on the Wind right? It would be perfect with a HSDPA.Other place to order except expansys.com?
-
-
That's too bad! -
No I don't know much about webshops in Italy, but Google.it will definetely give you some shops.
As I understand the first batch coming out this month in europe has 3 cells.
I don't know when the 6 cell will be available. -
The Eee 901 overclocks to 1.8ghz and the Wind to 1.9ghz.
I wonder how much of a difference the Eees SSD makes compared to the Winds hard disk. I would like to get a netbook with SSD but only the Acer One has SSD and is cheap. I think the hard disk and SSD performance will be the main difference in speed and battery. -
I am not that keen on the look of this laptop.
I came across another mini notebook today the Medion Akoya mini E1210 i have not seen this notebook being mentioned on this forum yet (the search is done so i cannot do a complete search) but it might be another one to consider for those that like notebooks of this size.
https://www.notebook.de/medion-akoya-mini-g-811/ -
You say you are not keen on the look of this laptop yet the link you posted is the exact same laptop with the same specs. -
Yeah the Median is a rebranded Wind. At least that is what German magazines are reporting
On a side note... has anybody been able to find any info on the Wind with SSD? I read that a SSD version will come out later. Anybody see any recent news about it? Price? timetable? -
Your hilarious, thats the same laptop..
-
The Medion notebook styling from what i have seen of it online looks better to me than the MSI notebook styling. Like i said in my post i was referring to the looks of the laptop and not the specs.
I didn't know that it was just a rebranded version of the MSI notebook.
If these are the correct pictures then you can see that these models don't look exactly the same.
-
You might want to go visit the eye doctor.
Same exact laptop, different color pattern. -
The Medion notebook is meant to be more similar to the HP'S Mini Note in terms of looks. If you cannot see a difference then i think that it is just best to leave it as that.

All the pictures of the Medion seem to be just the case. The ports are all missing. But the ports are all in the right place if you compare it to the real pictures of the Wind from cnet.
It is hard to judge the Medion from the current pictures. They seem to be heavily photo shopped. Would need some real hand on pictures.
I wonder if Medion will change anything in the configuration or OS.
edit... I just clicked on the link above. There are real pictures of the Medion. Doesnt look bad. It still a Wind but the color change looks good. Guessing from the pictures it will only be available with windows?
Why does it say 1.3/0.3M Webcam? and again only the 3cell battery.... -
I think its 1.3MP stills, .3MP video.
And god, the black Wind is good looking. It really is like a mini-MacBook, just missing OS X and Apple badge on the back. I now know what my next laptop will be. -
The GPU on Atom chipsets is probably worse than the Celerons... So I guess it's too early to say for sure that I'll get a Wind over EEE701.
-
With the auto OC though at 1.9, its definately faster.
Also, with just a 2200mAh battery, it still lasted longer than the Eee900 with its 5200mAh -
And there are plenty of other good reasons to get a Wind over the 701. -
Both your answers were my exact thoughts before I read this:
http://forums.msiwind.net/internal-hardware/gma-950-will-downclocked-133mhz-t282.html
Basically, the GPU is limited to 33% performance. -

I think I would go for the Linux version... but I have one question:
Does it support XP Media Center Edition?? -

Wow... I just found out that the Fn key on the Wind is switched with the Ctrl key... so that the layout on the botttom-most row is: Fn, Ctrl, Windows, Alt.
WTF??? -
A lot of laptops are like that, and unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done unless the BIOS allows you to swap it around.

From wiki
directx 9 check (does it run on the GMA 950? I think so. It does have directx 9 so should be ok, it is faster then the Radeon 9000 i think and that is the minimum.)
256mb ram check
It should install and run fine. I would not recommend it since a normal XP version reduced with nlite to get rid of all the junk will run better. If you are planning to get a TV USB dongle then check the minimum requirements for that. They might be higher. -
i read that the Eee 901 not only over clocks to 1.8ghz, but also underclocks to 1.2 ghz. Wondering if that is true. and wondering how many extra minutes that would give on a CPU that supposedly uses 4W.
i been looking out for the Wind since pictures were posted on th net a while ago. just waiting for some more user reviews and the rest of the crew to come with their Dells, Gigabyte, ECS, Acer.
but the money is currently on the Wind. no way i'm paying for an Asus unless it turns out to be waaaay better. -
-
I have read from the UK previews that it overclocks to 1.9 GHz when plugged in, and underclocks to 1.1 GHz when not plugged in if the turbo function is activated.
See here for details: MSI Wind Review -
Wind:
1.6 -oc> 1.9 when AC
1.1 -oc> 1.6 when battery -
You've got the second one backward, it underclocks when not plugged in, it will not automatically go to 1.1 GHz when on battery.
1.6 -Turbo-> 1.1 on battery -
Oh, my bad.
-
cool. my question now is how much of a difference with that actually make?
will the small amount of heat from 1.1 to 1.6 make a difference with the fan?
i wonder if it means running the computer at 5h, 30 mins and 5h, 40 mins. -
-
Battery time is quite well described by Laptop Mag
I'm guessing that 5 hours and 30 minutes is at 1,1Ghz. -

So does anyone know how long until it is released in the US? The XP 6 cell to be specific...

Problly only LG knows.
