I am superclose in getting the GT70 but there is one big problem that keeps me from closing the deal.

From the reviews I`ve read so far it seems that the MSI GT70 is very noisy, even compared to other brands. From the review, they say the fan makes 43dB to 52dB when the system is loaded. As far as fan noise it seems that

Asus < Alienware < MSI and Clevo

Comparing with Asus G75, that is SUPER LOUD, the Asus G75 with GTX 670M goes from 37dB to 41dB. Waaay lower than MSI. Even Alienware with GTX 580M is more "silent" than MSI, ranging from 43dB to 46dB. Since I would ideally have picked Asus with the 680M, they still don`t offer it, which is bad, so I feel I have to pick the "least" noisy notebook. I don`t like Alienware looks at all, so I am stuck with picking either the Clevo or the MSI.

Are there any way of controlling the fan of the GT70 or is that a dead end since the noise that comes from the fan is because the fan really have to go that fast to cool down the system. Or have MSI put out too high RPM just to be safe?

I`m thinking editing the fan speed for a while, experimenting, figuring out which speeds are really nescessary both when doing office work, and when gaming. Then once that part is done, you do a BIOS mod and hardcode those speeds in to the BIOS so you don`t have to think about the fan anymore. Best thing would have been to get any of the resellers to ask MSI to make a custom BIOS for those who want that, but I`m shure MSI want to be as safe as possible, hence why the fans run so fast.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

i got stock firmware, and msi afterburner controls my fan at auto..

When normal internet surfing, the fan goes on for 1minute and off.0%-20% every 5minutes..
Not a problem at all for me.

Thanks man. Those fan settings seem very interesting. :)

Man thats one thing I don`t like, a fan that pulse off and on all the time. I rather have a consistent low hum instead, especially when surfing.
20% of the max speed? Can you even hear that? :)

I'm also interested in a Gaming Laptop with the GTX 680M but for me only the Alienware m17x R4 and the MSI GT 70 are on my mind because I don't really like the Clevo. My only question would be if the new GT 70 ONE will have the same CPU-Throttling issues like the one with the 670M/675M like i read in the review on notebookcheck. Even if I like the option of having the 120hz screen in the AW I really like the MSI features like the Steelseries Keyboard or the Matt-screen and also it's nicer to have the 4GB Vram-version instead of the not so good Dell-version. So my only concern would be the Throttling problem. Which of the two options you guys think will have less problems?

    Hi guys, I'm new here.
I bought a GT70 in June last year, but lately, i started to notice something.
My fan speed is constantly changing, like 10 sec full speed, then low, then 10 sec full speed...
Even when my laptop feels cold. I just have to turn turbo fan on, but that's annoying as well.
I found somewhere on the internet that some fans weren't capable of spinning at a low speed, but the software tells them to, so they just change speed all the time?
I'm not sure about this so I wanted to have your opinion...

    I have a GT70 0ND
    Intel Core i7-3630QM
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 675MX / 2GB GDDR5

Please help me because i'm about to jump out my window...

You can also use svet's tool to program in the fan curve you want.

Have you ever tried cleaning out your computer with a vacuum? It sounds like something is stoping the fan from spinning at the designated speed and there for the fan is trying to get whatever may be in the way, out of the way, to spin at the desired speed. Dust and hair like to stop the fan from spining. try it.

As roto281 said, clean your computer fans, and monitor your CPU and GPU % utilization. You may have some program run that slowly builds up temps and thus causes your computer to ramp up. After cooling down it spins down considerably so you might get those constants ramps ups and down.

And as the others also mentioned, there are some tools to change your fan reference table as well as specific % fan control, to avoid going all turbo :D
