Hi guys. I'm in the market for a 17.3inch gaming notebook with 780M GPU. Right now i'm looking at either the MSI GT70 or the Sager 8270 (170SM). I am really torn between the two. The far superior speakers, trackpad, and keyboard on the MSI GT70 versus the Sager look very enticing. However, I am worried about the temps. While I realize the anandtech reviews of 100C temps are probably due to bad review unit, it still worries me actual users are getting temps in the range of 80-90C.

The sager positives are that it is user upgradeable without voiding the warranty. Its also a bit cheaper, but my budget is fairly flexible. It also looks a bit nicer, but that's subjective.

Overall, with temps that high, can the longevity of the machine be impacted adversely? Would the better keyboard and speakers of the MSI outweight the higher temps in the machine?

Am interested in hearing what other users have to say between comparing the MSI and Sager models. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Personally, I have found MSI lately to have superior features, sound, build quality and overall ease of upgradeability. Temps are nothing to worry about and remember that components were made to withstand such temps. These are not the first, nor the only, laptops in history or even in the current market with similar temps. You can even find units right now from other manufacturers operating over 90 degrees and still being told it's "normal".

I don't think the higher temps will affect you. I would gladly accept slightly higher temps for silent operation, and I actually get cooler temps if I use turbofan if I so desired. But multiple monitor support, steelseries keyboard, much better sound and personally much better looks, won me for MSI :)

Just a note, Sager/Clevo has the worse built-in speakers out there and some, like the w350st's can even sound like a PSP. Also they come equip with cheap 3.5mm audio jacks and VIA onboard audio, which deliver distorted sound when paired with creative home cinema. In short if you are an audiophile or someone who cares about the sound quality, avoid clevo/sager because you will be having some of the worse sound experience ever. I cancelled my w350st order after testing the audio solutions in person. Pretty disappointing :D

The temp shouldn't bother you. 90c is not too bad and won't damage anything, trust us.

I've used both Clevo and MSI now and both have their own shares of pro and cons.

And if you don't care about noise or you wear a headset/headphones, you can always turn on cooler boost to drop your temps a ton. You'll never get to 80C using cooler boost even when playing your most intense game for hours!

And about the barebones: I heard the barebones keyboard is different (still good, but not as good) and the sound quality not as good because it does not have the subwoofer. But I do not own a barebones, this is just what I read somewhere on these forumns.

Temps are perfectly fine on the MSI! I'd say go with MSI :)
