Is there a way to change what the media control buttons do on the 1722 and the SCM? Id prefer volume control over multimedia controls - is there any hack that anyone knows of?

Good idea. I hereby commission someone who knows more than me to make their own SCM software that turns the back/stop/play/forward controls into volume up/down and mute controls.
