Hi, first thread here and don't know if i'm posting in the right section so admins please move this to the proper section if this is wrong.

So I bought a laptop in Sweden from "Webhallen", they call it "Webhallen Config L17-0209 / 17.3" / FHD / 120Hz / i7-7700HQ / 16GB / 256GB SSD / GTX1070 8GB / G-Sync". The price was 19990 SEK or around 2500 dollar. That is around 500 dollar cheaper then the branded models with the same specs. Link to the computer:
    https://beta.webhallen.com/se/produ...Hz-i7-7700HQ-16GB-256GB-SSD-GTX1070-8GB-G-Syn

So i started to look on the web to find the manufacturer if i someday need replacement component or just want to read reviews about it. So far i think its a Clevo computer, the chassi is the same as the MSI GT72VR. Specs:

    Intel Core i7 7:e gen. 7700HQ / 3,8 GHz
    RAM 16 GB ( 2 x 8 GB ) DDR4 2133Mhz
    1x256GB Crucial Samsung PM961 m.2 PCIe 3.0x4 SATA SSD (2800MB/s read / 1100MB/s write)
    17,3", 1920 x 1080 FHD 120Hz, TN 2017 Gen
    Two Dynaudio-speakers, subwoofer

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 - 8 GB GDDR5 SDRAM
    Intel® HD Graphics 630
    Supports NVIDIA® Optimus™ Technology
    NVIDIA G-Sync

    Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac
    Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 Plus Bluetooth
    Gigabit Ethernet

    HDMI (4K 60Hz)
    6 x USB 3.0
    1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C
    1 x Mini Display Port 1.2

Adding some pictures for easier identification.

You could get the gt72vr for $1300 back in march with the 6700hq and a worse sd. Amazing how much they increased the price just for the 7700hq which is barely a performance upgrade from the 6700hq.

That's not a Clevo chassis but one from MSI.

Certainly does look like a barebones GT72VR, minus the gold plated audio ports. That's no Clevo chassis.

Aha I was just asuming it was a Clevo since "Webhallen" did sell their computers earlier. Hmmm so maby its just a barebone MSI gt72vr 7rd dominator. So do MSI sell their computers unbranded to resellers? Anyway I was looking for a computer that i can bring around in the camper or on the boat. Won't travel with this beast since its half the weight as luggage :) So far i'm impressed by the build quality, does'nt run hot and the screen is really good. And "Webhallen" offers 3 years warrenty on the computer so i think its a good deal.

They do. One of the more popular computers on this forum is the MSI 16L13, which is sold as the Eurocom Tornado F5 and HIDEvolution EVOC 16L-G-1080. It's a 15-inch notebook with a full desktop CPU and GTX 1080 GPU. There are others as well, including some new thin-and-light models that are sold by the same retailers.

So if I want to see any review about this laptop i should watch MSI gt72vr 7rd dominator reviews? Is it the same components like the screen and keyboard? I know the original should have Steelseries keyboard and is the barbone equiped with the same? It feels good and the keys have a metal feeling... Is there any reason to buy a branded over a barbone? If i would have bought a branded MSI i get 1 year warrenty, with this barebone i get 3 years.

The keyboard should be a Steelseries as well. I have a old MSI Barebone and it has the same Steelseries keyboard that came on the name brand MSI's at the time.

Basically, an MSI Barebone system is a stripped down unbranded chassis. I do not know if all the parts such as the motherboard and display are the same. The thermal system should be the same though or at least it was on my Barebone system.

Basically, you are getting the same laptop as the MSI GT72 without the branding and certain small features such as gold plated 3.5mm jacks.

But to answer your question, yes, you can read the GT72 reviews and get a good idea of what to expect.

Barebone do not have steelseries keyboard but generic one unless otherwise noted. You won't be able to upgrade to it due to no support by MSI. The only way to be able to use such keyboard is to purchase the MSI-branded systems according to MSI.

Another question, if I want to update bios should I use the file on MSI:s webpage for the GT72Vr 7re dominator? My Bios looks like this:

Yea its really clean, just two stickers at the right downside of the keyboard. Otherwise its just plain black metal finish. Not like the disco gaming rigs

Ok so I checked the Bios update page and in the manual i says the bios file name should be ecual to the one displayed in bios.

    Mine says: E1785ED61.308
    Bios file from MSI: E1785IMS.30B

And also in the manual it says:
    4. BIOS files provided here areexclusive only for MSI -branded Notebook PCs and not compatible with any MSI Whitebook/Whitebrand barebones. MSI takes no responsibility for any damage caused by improper use or lack of technical expertise.

So can I even update my bios, seems like it is totaly unknown if i search for my current version...

Correct, you can't update your BIOS/EC using the ones on MSI's website due to PCB/EC differences, but you can use the drivers and some utilities.
I provided the page since you wanted to know the equivalent model on the branded side. Let me know if you need anything else, thanks. :)

Thx for the tip! Well the laptop works flawless now and i don´t have any intentions of OC this one so i guess i´ll skip the bios update. Just curious if i ever need to update the bios where i could find a proper file... o_O

If you have the hardware, you can update it if you use a hardware programmer, as long as you have the original files.
You should be able to force flash the MSI Bios and see if that works, and if it doesn't just flash back, but that's only if you have a HW programmer. It's the EC that will cause problems, as if that chip is too small to fit on a SOIC8 clip (like a Pomona 5250), you would have to desolder. And if you knew how to do that already you would not be posting here asking about it :)

BTW invest in a SPI programmer. It's invaluable.
