The notebook comes with a GTX 1060 3gb. I understand this is not the actual desktop version but a slightly slimmed down version. My question is in the future would I be able to replace the gpu with say a 1060 6gb or maybe even a 1080? im thinking the desktop versions most likely wouldn't fit in the case but maybe? Would it be possible to buy one of the mobile versions of these cards and put it in? is the slimmed down card due to power requirement or in theory could I maybe make some space in the case (remove the DVD drive) and hook up a fully fledged desktop 1080? Thanks!

I'd not get this laptop anyway. Yes the 999$ price tag is indeed an attractive, but the fact the GTX 1060 is soldered and nerfed (The desktop 3GB is never recommended, even a 1050Ti 4GB has a close performance) is a letoff. The build quality in the MSI GP series is mediocre, and the laptop might get too hot (The chart goes as follows in quality and cooling solution, from worse to best: GL, GP, GE~GS, GT). If anything, I'd recommend a GT62VR everytime over the GP62MVR and the GE62VR if you can add few hundreds. Trust me it's worth it!
If you're really short on cash and absolutely need a pascal GPU based laptop, it's a good deal. But don't be surprised if it's not as solid as you'd have thought! Good luck!

This is a budget gaming notebook with good value but there may be things that you may regret down the road as SkidrowSKT mentioned.

Only the GT models from MSI are going to have the removable graphics cards. Generally only on the higher end systems will manufacturers maybe offer that. You really won't see entry level models or mid-range laptops with removable graphics really. But the Leopard is still a pretty good deal for the price for its performance.

The GP62 seems to be the best pascal option on a budget.
Can I upgrade an MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-248 graphics card?
