Want to use it because it installs fine and gives handy info/looks nice, but don't want to mess up my system or OS. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Why not - I'm using 1.2.1711.2101 (for some Win10 model) on my GT70 Win8.1 without problems; mainly for fan control.

You should be fine without running into any issues.

I wish it would work but after installing (and whether updating it to latest or keeping at the version I have) I get a black screen after every restart and nothing I try is able to restore the video. That includes touching the SCM-enabled video on/off touch button.

The only thing that works is to remove the battery, hold power for 30 seconds and turn it back on. It is a repeatable issue every time. Any solution..?

Try removing the application, reboot, reinstall, and reboot.

Hi Kevin, once I hit the black screen I attached an external monitor - uninstalling the program did work, but re-installing repeats the issue.

I opted to stay on an earlier BIOS because I am running a highly customized machine, could this be a reason? The chipset is HM67 if that helps...

And one side question if you could - I will be upping my RAM. I have not found an available teardown guide for the GT780DX but what I need to know is 1) can I replace the bottom two sticks of RAM near the CPU without having to remove the heatsink and 2) is removing the keyboard very easy? I am hoping I don't need to disassemble the entire system just to reach the two RAM slots underneath the keyboard... I'm guessing I would pry off the touch bar, find a few keyboard screws there and maybe some on the flip side of the laptop, pop off the keyboard and be able to access the RAM...is this accurate? Thank you!

Can you provide your current version of BIOS & EC in their full name?

Here is the information for my system:

    GT780DX / MS-1761

The BIOS I have is v. 2.10.1208 (E1761IMS.10B, Build date: 08/15/2011 10:10:10). MSI website seems to have a 10H version dated 10/28/2011, should I upgrade?

The EC version is 1761EMS1 v. 4.18, Build date 08/16/2011

The system now has a 980M + i7-2960XM in it..

Thank you for your help Kevin!

    Yes, you should.
You may want to check with Svet to find out how to get your machine tuned to obtain better performance.

    Ok,

I will reach out to him. A little nervous to change the BIOS, but I did keep all MSI original parts including the video card so it may be worth considering.

    Thanks again Kevin!

    Hi Kevin,

I'm going to upgrade the RAM shortly, if you could help me re: this (if you know) that would be great!

    Thank you!

I'm somewhat surprised to see an MSI GT780DX still up and running.

I bought mine new when they 1st came out and it ran great for a bit over 4 years before the mainboard gave out.

All I changed in mine was the wireless card(7260ac) and put in SATA III SSDs.

I used a custom bios but don't remember much about it but you might be able to find it in the 780DX thread?

The 780DX was prone to hinge failure due to heat on the left side.I epoxied mine back together more than once before locating a new case.I repasted the GPU and CPU often.

My keyboard was a good one and the screen was perfect.

    Best of luck with yours

Thank you, not only running, but running very well. It was the best I could do before diving into the 10 series of cards, but I am very pleased with the results after the upgrades. I've been encouraged to update the BIOS by several people, but honestly if I can play Far Cry 5 and Doom at 60 FPS in 2K and 30 FPS in 4K that's good enough and not worth tampering with!

** edit: on a 4K monitor, not on the laptop obviously B)

Could anyone point me in the direction of a good GT780DX teardown video/instructions? I need to change the RAM (all four sticks) and can't find any guide online...

Or if someone can explain how easy/hard it is to get the keyboard off and access the two RAM slots underneath

    Thanks!

2 memory slots are accessed by removing the bottom cover.

Use the you Tube video for replacing the keyboard to access the memory slots that are under the keyboard.
