My 1761 ver1.1 mainboard might have been damaged and its out of warranty. I found a site that sells the cheapest MSI replacement mainboards, but they don't have GT783 version mainboard. They do have the GT683 version though. My understanding is that the GT783 and GT683 mainboards has something reworked so it can supply more voltage for the GTX580m.
I plan on upgrading to the 7970m from my 570m, so the added voltage would be nice.
From the links below, the mainboards look identical, except for the sata connector for the optical drive. The 1761 version has a separate module, while it looks like the 16F2 version has it soldered on the board.
MSI MS16F2 GT683DX INTEL independent laptop Motherboard [msi MS16F2 GT683DX] - $285.99 : laptop part & accessories
MSI MS1761 GT780DX independent laptop Motherboard [msi MS1761 GT780DX] - $285.99 : laptop part & accessories
Anyone have info on this? Much appreciated.

It is cheaper on the forum, but you need 1761 mainboard.
"My understanding is that the GT783 and GT683 mainboards has something reworked so it can supply more voltage for the GTX580m." you are wrong gt680/683/685 = same mainboard. GT780/783 the same also.
Can 16F2 mainboard fit onto 1761, GT780, GT783 chassis?
