CPU use with fresh Win10 install

Hey all,
I recently did a fresh install of Win10 on my GE65 i7 9750H Raider. Before the fresh install, the cpu would slow itself down to around 800mhz while idle, then ramp up according to load, to its max turbo of 4.5ghz. After the fresh install, it runs near max turbo all the time.

Wondering if the fresh install had anything to do with that and if there's any way I can restore cpu slowing itself when idle and speeding up according loads.

Do the chipset drivers have anything to do with that. Would the chipset drivers that Win10 loads be the cause of that.

Wondering if I should try to install the chipset drivers that the unit comes with from the factory.

 

Check your processor states. Settings > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management

 

Let it do ALL the updates, it will take a bit, and you should always install the latest drivers to ensure that everything works as it should.

 

Try installing the Dragon Center.

 

Had it see to 5% Min and 100% Max. Set max to 99%. Will try that.

 

When you say let "it" do all the updates, are you talking about Windows?

Should I only run chipset drivers from MSI support for my model or the latest from Intel itself? I currently have installed drivers from Intel that were newer than what MSI support is offering.

 

Dragon Center is installed. It's the only original software I reinstalled with the fresh install of Windows, as It's only program I've found so far that I can run a custom fan profile with. It's version 2.62.

 

Yes, it is the Windows update, go into the update window and check for updates, to force it to run.

I always run the latest drivers, so you want at least iGPU, dGPU, Intel ME, Intel Chipset, Audio, WiFI, LAN, card reader, touchpad, and Steelseries engine, all up to date.

 

Well it seems the processor speed according to load is tied to how you have your Windows power profile set. I had it set to Balanced and the CPU ran full turbo all the time. Set it to Power Saver profile and the cpu will idle down to 800mhz during no load, then ramps up as expected during loads.

During a video rendering test, it would ramp up to 3.9ghz, not quite full turbo of 4.5.

What's strange is, my desktop PC's power plan is set to Balanced and it idles the cpu down to 800mhz during idle on that plan but won't do it on this laptop when set to Balanced.

 

What about ThrottleStop?

 

I've looked into that. I'm not a gamer or a power user trying to eek out every bit of performance possible, plus I don't need any more programs trying to control what some other program already installed is trying to do. Kinda like the battle I'm currently dealing with between Windows and Dragon Center about who's going to manage the battery. It seems neither is responding to the settings I make on the percentage to charge it to.
