I've been following the MSI forums for a while, but this is my first time posting.
A while back a bought a MSI 1651 and I've finally acquired all the pieces:

    p8400 cpu
    Kingston 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM
    WD Scorpio blue 250 GB
    Intel 5300
    Tube of MX-2

Yet even after scouring this forum and the internet, I realized I have some questions and I was hoping someone could help me out.

Concern #1: There are two pieces that came in the barebones box...and I don't know what to do with them.

The first one is a metal square that has 4 holes on its edges and two screws.
The second is a piece of black foam (perhaps a thermal pad?) with a peel off white border around it.
Both of these are in there own individual plastic baggies.

So if anyone could tell me what I'm supposed to do with these...it was be greatly appreciated.

Concern #2: The thermal paste just needs to go on the die of the CPU and GPU and then I tighten down the screws...I don't need it anywhere else (SB?) do I?

As you can tell I don't know much about building laptops and hopefully haven't gotten in over my head. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The metal square is for using half height mini-PCIE cards (WiFi). You won't need it most likely.

If the "black piece of foam with the white boarder" is what I think it is, it's a .5" x 1.25" black piece of plastic used on the ID-1 model of the 1651, and the ID1 of the 1722 on the lid, where the logo should go. If you have an ID2 or ID3, you should have an all metal lid, and the piece is useless. There's a small black piece as well, that goes on the front of the screen, where the indentation is.

Concern #2: CPU & GPU are all you need.

Thank you very much answering quickly. Glad to know those 2 little baggies weren't that important. Looks like I'll start building tomorrow.

    Once again, thanks a ton.

I tried to figure that out too, in the end i only sticked the smaller one at the small rectangular part below the monitor

Do all the 1651's come without any actual MSI logos on them?
Was wondering if that was because mine was 1 of the "cheaper" units

none of the barebones have the logos unless supplied by the reseller
