I've heard stuff either way on the build quality of these machines, so i'd like to hear some stuff from the owners, especially if you've owned other brands before (asus, lenovo). How dies the build quality of msi compare? lots of people having problems with stuff breaking? and how is the customer service?

I'm going to school soon and need a laptop that can hold up. I can't be sending it in every few months.

My bezel cracks, same with the touch thing with the power button.

Apart from those small things, it's solid.

Built quality is very good. The rest is down to personal choice.

YEah, after reading through those i get mixed signals. it seems as though the (gaming laptops is what i'm looking at) g700 series (gt725, gx720) seem to be ok, but people are having cracking issues with the g600 series. this kinda puts me off cause i need the smaller screen...

    I dropped mine (1722) twice....

    Why wont it break :(

I don't want it too but its built so rediculously, its refusing to stop working lol,

Maybe MSI's new books bezels are much better :). (6 Series)

All this talk of fractures in the bezel, lid screws being too tight, and the screen rippling when you shut the lid is really scaring me. Not to mention the keyboard flex and touchpad wearing off.

Are all of these issues isolated to 1656 and older models? Any news if the new GX640 will have the same case? If not, I think paying nearly $1400 for the GX640 and still having these issues is unacceptable.

My GT627 is newer, it had some black things to stop the flex, I can give you pics when I get my bluetooth working.

The touchpad does suck compared to my toshiba (which I had for a year and the touchpad is still great).

I bet they have fixed the bezel problem by now.

Overall it's not bad, you get great performance and those little problems are cheap to fix.

    actually looking at some specs, i think i could handle a 17". 14.1"(L) x 10.24 "(D) x 1.06"~1.22"(H) on the gx640 vs 15.56 "(L) x 10.95 "(W) x 1.04"~1.38"(H) on the gx740. just an inch and a half bigger. also, compared to other laptops at 16:9 (lets go with dell studio 15 for a general starting point) at Width: 14.6" (371.6mm)
    Height: 1.0" (25.3mm) front / 1.5" (38.9mm) back
    Depth: 10.0" (252.9mm)

seems not to be too much worse. any thoughts on portability gt725 owners?

the gx740 is pretty thin and light for a 17" gaming laptop, probably the thinnest out there that's planned to have a 5870 or even a gtx285 (a lesser card) at the moment

its around 7 pounds and gets as thick as 1.3 or 1.4 inches i believe? at the thickest point.

theres the rumored envy 17 so you can wait for that if you're super concerned about portability, but it's not likely to have a 5870 so..also the price worries me a bit if you go the i7 route.
I think that, especially for the money, the MSI GX740 is a pretty dang good choice. I also like the aesthetics of it minus some of the red but yea thats just me.

i don't mind the red really. black and red go well together imo.

i just want something i can carry to school everyday and not have to worry about it being too big. thickness does not bother me, nor does weight (hey, i weigh 265. i can carry 7 pounds) it's the width and depth that might get to me though. 1 inch wider doesn't seem like very much... wish i could see it in person.

I've owned two MSI notebooks, a 1013 and a 1223. Both are 12" models, and both are rock solid. My 1013 took a beating though 4 years of college and is still going strong. My 1223 is my main machine now, and see no reason to think that it won't last as long as my 1013. The 1013 still gets daily use for minor tasks, but having just opened it up recently to put in a new wifi card everything looks great still, I could easily still be using it as my main computer.

thanks for the input. it seems as though the build issues were an isolated incident then?

hmm..seems like it's a hit or miss with MSI quality then...

Flexy keyboards, I can put up with for the price, but the cracks would just really upset me.

ugh...I hate my current options: either wait 2-3 months for the G73 if I order soon; OR gamble on an MSI and hope I don't get cracks, AND paying almost the same for lesser hardware and lower res screen. :-/

Not really gambling, if it cracks, you get it fixed, but the issue hasn't been reported since 1651 barebones? and GT627 models (So the first ones really,)

So the odds are its been completely fixed,

MSI laptops are quite cheaper compared to other brands. Im just wondering whether these laptops are of good quality? How long does an MSI laptop usually last?

Im planning to buy MSI EX460X T66. Is it practical to buy this laptop?
