    Hi everyone,
    I've been wanting to upgrade from my i5 430m in my MSI GX640, so recently I purchased an i7 820qm from here: Intel Core i7 820QM 1.73 8M Q3B9, Q1TK, Q1NG ES Processor 0675901017220 | eBay

Yesterday, I installed the i7, but when I would try to start the computer, the power light would flicker on and then go back off. If I pressed it one or two more times, the computer would stay on, but all I got was a black screen (no post or anything).

Today I put the i5 back in, and the computer works fine.

So, is there something wrong with the processor I got? Or could something else be the problem?

    Thanks!

Yes I think you should return the processor.

It might work only on other systems but thats not exactly a good reason to keep it.

I don't understand. The i7 820qm is supposed to be compatible with the GX640. Is there something different about this one?

It might have something to do with the fact that it is an Engineering Sample (ES). Could be that your laptop doesnt do well with ES cpu's.

After doing some more research, it seems like other people have had trouble with the Engineer Sample i7s on the GX640. The seller doesn't accept returns based for incompatibility, though -- is selling the cpu back on ebay my best bet?

Yea you can just sell it again. You can't sell it here on the forums though. If he didn't put ES anywhere in the listing you can probably get him for it not being as described.
