Noticed on Gentechpc they have a barebones MSI with 780m for $1639 this is quite a bit cheaper then the $1999 and leaves room open for much more customization. The CPU upgrades are cheaper on Barebones models as well any idea why and is there a reason to go with the regular $1999 over the barebones with same customizations?

Not much difference hardware wise just cosmetics.
GT70 has a brushed aluminum finish on the lid and palmwrest not sure if the barebone version does. Permormance wise they are mirror images of one another.

The keyboard is different I believe. It's still a good keyboard but not as good as the Steel Series keyboard on the regular. Although while both the barebones and regular have the Dynaudio sound system, I have heard that the sound on the barebones doesn't sound as good because it doesn't have a built in subwoofer. Also the barebones has by default 8GB of RAM less, no Blu-Ray, no Killer 1202 wireless.

I think the chassis is slightly different, also there is no multicolor backlit keyboard, no preloaded OS, different wireless card, and the ram seems to be cheaper. My prebuilt MSI came with 2x8 gb ram sticks, whereas the barebones option for the 2x8 costs alot more. Also I don't see any option for mSATA adapters or mSata SSDs. Other than that, barebones options for most resellers are a great way to get a top end pc/laptop for a cheaper price. most of the sites also offer a 50 or 75 dollar discount on the items when over a certain price. For the most part, as long as you have a good gpu, cpu 1080p screen 8gb of ram and a decent sized 7200 rpm hard drive you should be good.

Thanks guys already had an order in for the regular GT70 and they only just put up the barebones. It's about the same after the current ram promotion and OS already installed. And I like the steel series keyboard and aluminum finish keeps cool to touch. But looks like a great deal still!
