    I just bought a GS70 2QE-066US STEALTH PRO with 970m
I notice that when the power is off, and charger unplugged, overnight the battery drains from 100% to about 60%.
What is the issue here? I hope this is not a defective laptop?

Is it asleep or is it actually powered down and completely off?

It is completely off, using the "shut off" option.

Weirdly enough I get the same thing in my MSI GT60 with 680M. Not a clue.

    3 things to check:

    1) in windows under "power options" verify what the buttons are set to do. by default afaik the "shutdown" button option is set to "sleep" not shutdown. so you maybe pushing the power button thinking it's powering off, but it is not.

    2) calibrate battery using the utility. when the pc shows 100% charge it could simply be calibrated wrong

    3) if you changed anything in the bios , go back in the bios and make sure that the "charge while in s3/s4/s5/????? state" options are not enabled. these options feed power to a usb port even if machine is in deep sleep. this is also related to the MSI SuperCharger app. if you dont have an apple product you may want to try unistalling this app. you can always download it again at

Last night, I turn off the "quick boot" option in Power Management in Windows as well as turning the "Legacy USB" option in the BIOS to auto. After leaving the laptop off for 7 hrs, the battery drained by 2%.
I might just have solved the problem.

But to be safe, I used the battery calibration utility, to hopefully further improve the battery life, but it is stuck at "Now Discharging Time Remaining 180mins" for about 20 mins.

Edit: while running battery calibration, the laptop made some strange noise and shut itself down. Upon reboot, the battery is at 0%. Now I am recharging it, then I will do a test and see how the battery drains.
