Just recently, the amber light for the battery indicator on the MS-1651 won't light up -- it won't charge. Do I need to replace the battery? Thanks in advance.

It might be the charger, does it have a light on the charger brick?

If that light is on then it could be the battery or the plug (not the cable), or the motherboard. Does it work on battery power?

Yes, it formerly worked with battery power, but now the battery wouldn't charge.

Ok, this is strange. After quite some time, the amber light suddenly illuminated. My other concern is that the battery is very very hot while plugged in. Any other thoughts? Or should I just get a new battery?

it sounds like your battery is the issue.

If it gets too hot it could be an indication that the cells are not charging / charged properly (there is a circuit inside batteries that supposed to regulate the charging and monitor cell health)

Does the laptop indicate either in the BIOS or the Windows screen any kind of unusual battery status - IE the charge goes from 100 to low battery very quickly ?

Before this happened, I noticed that my battery drains so fast than usual.

I think the battery is dying, A good way to revive it is by putting it in a Ziplock bag and then put that in the freezer for about 14-16 hours, and voila battery is Alive again. But that's kinda like a last resort and sometimes it doesn't work.

I had the same problem after running video compression on C2Q9000 on battery - power consumption was over 45 W, which is a lot for this battery. And when the battery has provide too much energy, it gets hotter and hotter.
After connecting the PSU, laptop started running from it, but there wasn't any charging. Battery started to charge after ~15 minutes of cooling down.

So I'm convinced that the battery is OK and it just needed to cool down a bit.

    Regards,

    JK

    P.S.:
My original 6-cell battery (in GT628) has after one year of service wear-level higher only about 11%. I hope that this battery will work good about next two-three years.
And in 12/2010 I bought non-original 9-cell battery. After half year of usage, there is wear level higher about 16%.

So I say: buy the new original battery, it probably will endure more time with less wear leveling.
