Hello,
May be some of you will remember something about MS 1029 barebone model. Reacently I found one from E-Bay and I've decided to buy it. I needed a chep and not powerfull laptop for a friend. I searched the forum, but I didn't found out how to fix the problem bellow:
So, when I installed all the parts and Vista x86 on it everything was good exept that there was no sound. The driver is good, even Vista shows that the bar on the volume control is moving, but there is no sound, so it's not a driver issue. The most interesting is that when you play with the volume control for a while (3-5 times you slide it up and down) the sounds appears and it works fine untill restart. I've also tried to plug in an external speakers, but there is no sound at all, even after you hear it from the laptop speakers. Now I don't know what to do anymore. Since it is from E-Bay I've decided to return it, but when I said to my friend that he has to pay again for the shipping he refused (I think this is the word for what he is - curmudgeon, take it out from the dictionary), so now he will keep it like it is. In that case I've offered to him to dissassemble it and see what I can do ... untill now - nothing. So any help is wellcome.

Just one more thing - I've reinstalled Vista several times and also tried with XP. It is the same every time![]()

Seems more like a hardware problem than a software one since you said plugging in external speakers had no sound output whatsoever. I wonder if you can replace the onboard soundcard with another one?
-
It must be hardware problem. But I though that it might be something with the conections inside, not the sound card itself. And the sound card is a soldered chip on the mainboard, so it can't be changed alone. I must change the mainboard to do so, but this will never happen, considering the way of thinking of my friend
Any chance somebody has a dissassemble guide on that model? -
Vista had huge sound compatibility problems when it was released. Given the age of the notebook, I wouldnt be surprised if its actually something that has to do with Vista... try installing XP or Ubuntu (to make sure if its a hardware problem or not).
Edit: Oh.. BTW, a solution you can try is buying an external sound card. Although, that would be more expensive than returning the laptop. -
You could also try a wireless sound adapter?
Since it runs from USB, but im not too sure on how anything to do with sound works hehe, i just press "play" and something "should" happen. -
Reading is the key -
Thank you all for the answers. It sould be some hardware issue, because yesterday I tried the mic also - no suprise - it wasn't working also
So this laptop is a crap. I'll try to find an external sound card.
By the way, catacylsm, what is this wireless sound adapter? I'm not quite familiar with wireless staff. Personaly preffer the old fashioned way - cablesBut since they are not an option anymore I'll have to try this one also.
