I have the stock BIOS in my GT70. I think my video card has just died on me as I only get a black screen with the default Nvidia driver for Win7 from the MSI website. I thought it might be prudent to update the BIOS before I buy another card just to make sure that's not the problem.

My issue is that I have the E1763IMS.50W BIOS version. This is the message on the documentation from MSI website for BIOS installation instructions...

"Please download BIOS corresponds to the version in your notebook. For example, if a notebook is equipped with version E1763IMS.300, then please download version E1763IMS.3XX. Users should be aware that using incorrect BIOS version can result in a bricked system."

My BIOS ends in .50W and there are not any BIOS updates on the MSI website that have a .5xx ending.

Do you think I need to update my BIOS? Which one should I use? I'm not using RAID but I have 2 drives, one SSD and one mechanical.

This is the link to the MSI support download page...

    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT70-2OD.html#down-bios&Win7 64

    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the link. Wow, that thing is over three hundred pages long. Some interesting stuff in the original post but I haven't seen any links to a bios download with the .5xx ending.

Yea, but only when Nvidia driver is uninstalled. I am just running on Intel HD Graphics 4600 right now. I wiped the Nvidia driver, I installed win 7 and the Nvidia driver from the MSI website and I just get black screen.

Do you have a monitor that you can test using HDMI output and see if it can output any signal or not?

I can hook it up to TV but I guess I would have to reinstall Nvidia driver, turn pc off, plug hdmi in to tv, and the power on?

Yes, see if the system can detect the TV? But if not then the GPU is very likely to have gone bad.

So I hooked it up to TV and it did put display up on tv. Can the Intel graphics put up an image on secondary monitor even if GPU is dead?

That's what I was thinking. I don't think the fact that I can get an image on secondary monitor is definitive proof that my GPU is working.

GT70 2OD output via digital output, you can check your Nvidia Control Panel to verify the source of signal as shown by zipperi. Regarding the Nvidia Control Panel error, try using the original driver provided by MSI.

This OS is a fresh install, right?
How about the latest Nvidia driver? DId you do custom installation and check the box for clean install?

Yes, fresh install of Win7 with Service Pack 1. I did clean install of Nvidia driver without GeForce Experience.

Can you launch Furmark and see if it can stress test the Nvidia GPU?

It's weird though, this morning I installed the Nvidia driver which was previously disabled. I turned the computer off and then plugged it into the television, and turned the computer on. The computer started up and projected the display on to the TV. But when I did a memory test for vram it only tests the Intel HD 4600, not the GPU... like the GPU isn't there. I opened Nvidia control panel and was looking at it. Ivan disabled the HD 4600 to see if the display would work off of the Nvidia driver only. I immediately got a black screen and had to shut down. When I restarted in safe mode and we enable the HD 4600, the Nvidia control panel doesn't work anymore.

You aren't supposed to disable Intel HD graphics because Nvidia GPU relies on it to work for the internal display as well as analog output. Intel HD graphics is the middle man.

Woops. Well I guess I can start over. The Nvidia control panel was working before I disabled the HD 4600. But the strange part is that I did this process before, where I removed all Nvidia drivers and remnants and installed default driver fresh and I just got a black screen. When I did it this morning, it was the first time that it actually started up and didn't have a black screen, so that's what made me think maybe Vram is bad on the card and giving me an intermittent issue.

I restored to previous state before messing with HD 4600 and before installing driver for Nvidia driver. I then installed Nvidia driver. The first 3 times I started up, the pc froze when it hit the desktop screen. It sat for a couple hours and I just started it again to see what would happen and everything started up. Nvidia control panel is working so I ran FurMark, dynamic background only. It crashed quick and gave these errors... [IMG]

That Nvidia GPU is defective, suggesting you to contact MSI to see if it's still possible to repair your system.

Dooohhh. Well, at least I know for sure. I'm thinking MSI doing out of warranty work is going to be expensive. I see some used cards on ebay for around $300.

Also, I was wondering about this 780m out of an Asus but the part # is different and I think the card's shape is different.

In some rare cases, the motherboard can be a cause of failure, so without the final confirmation of the root cause it may complicate things a bit.
Using a card from other manufacturers may also contribute to compatibility issue, however flashing the VBIOS sometimes solves such issue.
Going with manufacturer's RMA service can provide hassle-free and peace of mind. You can pay them to do diagnostics for you and then decide whether you wish to proceed with their service or not (diagnostic fee can be applied toward final repair cost).
