I'm writing this from my new laptop! Exciting.
Although I've got to be honest - with all of the hype about the Dynaudio speakers being the best and most powerful laptop speakers on the market, I'm honestly not that impressed. They're nice and clear, but still sound like laptop speakers (I wasn't expecting anything crazy, but I thought they'd stand out to other laptop speakers. I mean, does the "subwoofer" on the bottom actually do anything?) I'm wondering if I have to do something to change the default settings (where would I do that?), or to install some kind of software or driver to bring out the full potential of the speakers.
Any tips?

If I have my laptop on my lap and I'm playing music with a good amount of bass, I feel vibrations going through my legs from the subwoofer. It works. Maybe I've come from some really crappy systems in the past, but these speakers surpass that of all of them combined. There is a lot more bass, crispness and loudness to these speakers than my friends DV7QE (4 speakers + sub) with "Beats" marketing. The only software you need are the Realtek drivers, which I would assume came preinstalled.

HowStuffWorks "How Speakers Work"
Honestly, I think the dynaudio speakers sound awesome for what they are, very full mids and highs. You're NOT going to get any kind of serious "low end" out of a laptop. Period.
The above article will explain why. -

Unless we go fully touch, the screen is where your keyboard is and the lid contains a big sub

But I like the way you think -

What HDDs? I don't use magnetic storage any more

as an O/S drive, I don't either. HOWEVER, I do a lot of travelling, and need to carry a rather larger amount of data than I can store on the size of SSDs I can afford (though at the rate HDDs are starting to climb, who knows in 6 months)
The crazy part is, impossible as it is, part of my brain is still trying to figure out how to accomplish something like this. . . without adding 30lbs of magnets and reducing battery life to about 5.5 minutes. It'd be interesting if you could seal and channel airflow into the back of the lid panel, maybe turn the back panel into a kind of passive radiator? I still think the amount of speakers required to even BEGIN to build the kind of pressure necessary to build a moderate low end sound is going to kill the whole concept, but it'd be AMAZING to see something like that attempted -

You might only be able to run the larger speaker from the mains when you are plugged in.

Maybe, but by the time you figure in all the extra parts and wattage. . .
Almost better off to do something like this:
Amazon.com: Twelve South BassJump 2(12-1109): Electronics
only problem with this PARTICULAR one is. . it's Mac only.
