Hello, I would really appreciate your input regarding my new msi gt62vr 7re that i just bought with a gtx 1070 and an i7 7700hq. is it normal to have temperatures of 88C on both cpu and gpu when gaming? notice that room temperature is 30C and dragon center fan mode is set on auto. on idle, the laptop has decent temperatures of 44C on both cpu and gpu. Thank you.

My GT72VR 7RE (GTX 1070, 7700HQ) I had briefly, never, ever saw temps that high on auto fan. GPU never went above 75C, ever; usually if the GPU temp exceeded 75C, the auto fans kicked in more and it dropped down to around 65C-70c maximum. CPU never exceeded 75C in any game, never came close. I have a 7820HK now though.

when fans are at 80%, gpu temperatures still reach 81C. should i return the laptop for another one of the same model?

I mean the temps aren't great, but that's still only 80%. If you can literally return it sure try another, otherwise if you can handle the fans it would not count as a machine you can return from temps. They aren't alarmingly high, just not the dream.

The thing is that my temps are contradicting all the reviews, benchmarks and feedback of people who own this laptop, this leads me to believe there is something wrong with my machine. this laptop is supposed to be very efficient in cooling and i'm not sure what to do with these temps, do i really have to kick fans on max to get temps below 80 degrees? maybe with other laptops, but I don't expect this one to.

Check Dragon Center and make sure the fans are spinning at maximum speed. Do a search so you can find the RPM the fans are supposed to be spinning at. If the fans are spinning when using the cooler boost button, at proper RPM, then you know the fans are working.

If the fans are working correctly, you may have a bad layer of thermal paste. Since BOTH the CPU and GPU are hot, this sort of throws out the window that the heatpipes could be defective, since the CPU and GPU use different heatpipes, not shared. So before trying to RMA, I suggest you buy some Grizzly Kryonaut thermal compound from Amazon, and repaste. It's VERY easy to do. If you've ever repasted a desktop CPU, it's even easier to do the laptop, because you have a LOT more room to work with. (with desktop CU's, you would have to remove the motherboard and all of the cables and other stuff to get the same amount of room).

If you're still nervous about repasting, watch a video and read some guides on it. It's extremely easy to repaste a GT62VR and GT72VR and GTx3VR laptop. The GT72VR (if you have a kaby lake it's a gT72vr not gt62vr) has a different layout so you should look at some guides for it.

This is for the GT73VR, showing how easy it is:

The GT62VR and GT72VR should have a different layout but you can look it up (the GT62VR has more NVME/SSD slots than the GT72VR).
    Here's one for the GT72:
    Start looking at 17 minutes:

    Basically, it's a simple process:
    1) UNPLUG AC !!!!! FIRST then unscrew case, then unplug battery cable.
    2) unscrew fans. Unplug battery cable (very important. You don't want something touching the PCB with the battery still supplying standby power to the PCB).
    3) remove fans (if you need to remove the power header).
    4) unscrew CPU heatsink, clean with microfiber cloth and 90%+ alcohol, apply Kryonaut, unscrew GPU heatsink and do the same thing.

Here's another video: it may not be your exact model.

    it's quite easy.

A lot of reviews have cherrypicked units, and in my experience people tend to exaggerate a little / have no idea how to put their laptop under real load and play with like VSync on all day.

Now to be fair your temps still seem too high for a "normal" GT62. But they're one of the coolest running 15" 1070 machines. They aren't too high for a normal 1070 machine, and I still would love you to check with max fans.

    Hi all,
Got my MSI GT62VR 7RE Dominator Pro in May 2017.
2 weeks ago one fan stopped working.
    Yesterday second fan stopped working.
After realizing that temperatures are very high, I installed MSI Dragon center and MSI Afterburn. All fans (GPU and CPU) are stopped at 0 rpm. WTF?!

    I tried everything:
1- pressed the pin in the back on the laptop (I don't even know what is it for) for 30sec.
2- installed latest versions of BIOS (E16L2IMS.308) and EC (16L2EMS1.107)
3- Clean install of Windows 10 Pro 64
4- Reinstall Dragon Center. Tried to select and edit all the profiles. I press the Cool Boost buton and nothing happens, except for the button's led that turn on.

Still fans don't work. Which means I have to write this message and turn the laptop off now as it starts to burn my hands.

Please let me know if you somehow found a way to fix this. I really want to avoid send it to warranty and wait 1 month to have it back, I really need it for work at the moment!

    Damn MSI !
"Cooling in MSI is awesome", they told me.

    Thank in advance,
    Best regards.

Hello I also have the MSI gt62vr Dominator Pro laptop. Guess what? Same problem. Here is what I have found out so far. It seems as though MSI has sold us a box of lemons painted to look like a Lamborghini. When gaming my laptop got so hot it actually started turning itself off. I noticed it was running very hot. After letting it cool a few minutes I turned it back on and found the CPU and GPU temperatures were at 89C which is WAY high. At around 90C the laptop will power down to protect itself. I found out both of my fans had stopped working. Since I actually am a computer technician and the warranty is up on my laptop I decided to pull the bottom cover to see what was up. Sure enough, fans do not spin as the unit heats up. But i don't think the fans are faulty. I can use my finger to "jump start" the fans by spinning them for a few seconds in the right direction and the RPM feedback triggers something in the EC into turning the fans on! They will then work normally for hours and change RPM as needed. After the fans start I have CPU temperatures around 33C and GPU is around 42C when idle and about 15C higher when gaming. If your temperature is up in the 80's and the fans are not starting then you have the same problem I do. After looking around the Internet it looks like others are having the same problems. There are probably a lot more that are not posting on the forums. If I was using this for just internet or school work the unit probably would not shut down because it would stay below 90C so many average laptop users that don't game may not even notice the fans are not running. Still, running the temperature in the 80C to 88C range can't be good for the life of the laptop. I Updated the EC controller firmware and updated the BIOS. Tried re-installing the Dragon Center and setting the fans to 80% at all temperatures ranges, No help. They simply will not start spinning until I just start them by hand so I am currently leaving the screws out of the bottom cover to do just that and leaving the laptop on most of the time. If anyone finds a solution please post it here. I love the laptop for its performance and speed but now that the fan control has gone ka-put not so much. What's up with all these bad VR laptops MSI? There has got to be a way for the Embedded Controller to start up the fans like it used to.

    @Rob Ballard
When you say it 'shuts down' at 90C, do you mean it powers off instantly (like you had a power outage, with the battery removed) and then powers on again by itself about 1 second later?

After I wrote that post, for one or two times that 1 fan worked again somehow, one of the 50 times that I had my pc for 15minutes m'ax. More than this it would burn, but since I had no other choise at those moments.....

I sent it to warranty as soon as I arrived to my homecountry and it came back working. I still didn't push it too much since then, but I surelly will put that cooling system up to some tests. MSI "sells" a very good cooling system, that was one of the reasons I choose this laptop. It appears that maybe to high componments, cooling system in these models (or batches) came with problems.

Unfortunatelly it seems that the safest and more sure solution is to send it to warranty... Specially in my case that if I open the laptop I lose warranty.

    Good luck with that,
    Kind regards

Hey, its OP back here and guess what?.....same exact thing just happened to me... when PC starts, cpu fan is 0RPM for 30 mins then suddenly it starts jumping around from 0 to 4000. This issue already happened a couple of years ago and someone found the solution for ANOTHER MODEL: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162459.0
but it seems MSI is not paying attention to the countless complaints about this issue on the forums to bother..

That forum said the problem is the yellow (fan speed) wire, rather than the actual fan itself. Perhaps check the cable for a break or damage?

The cpu fan on my GT62VR 6RE died a month after the warranty expired. Before I started having problems with the fan, my temperatures were really good. Even with the dead fan, I can still do some things without the cpu heating too much. I bought a fan on ebay. It shipped on Dec 22 and is finally due to arrive next week.

It's the same with my pc. First stopped the CPU cooler and yesterday I noticed the hot pc, when I went to analyze the 2 were standing still. My computer also gave problem in HDMI output. But I live in Brazil and I bought in Portugal, I will send by friend for guarantee. Does anyone have a different solution?

You can purchase the fan from MSI directly so feel free to give them a call.

Same for you, try local service and support center to see if you can purchase a cooling fan instead of going with warranty service by sending the machine back to Portugal (as Brazilian office may not offer warranty for many grey market items).

Thanks for the support. I'll send him to the guarantee. However, I did a process to try to reactivate the coolers and ended up working momentarily, I used my wife's hair dryer in fan mode and the 2 fans came back to work, however every time I call, I have to use this technique.

That's good, if you can get more out of it, why not? But don't forget to order a replacement anyway, because when the time comes it will still need to be replaced.

I know. But I live in Brazil and the spare parts have an extra MSI fee. Could you tell me the specific model of these fans?

You should be able to find the part number on a sticker on the component inside of your system.
