Pls anybody can kindly confirm for me whether the main hard disk interface is SATA III, I am sure the Mini Part of 4X128GB is SATA III. Because I want to update the 1TB 7200rmp Mechanical Disk to 500GB Samsung 840 Evo, But I am worried about the performance of SSD will be limited if the interface of MSI GT72 is SATA II. Pls kindly help me to make the decision. So far I have the infor that ASUS G751 are two SATA III.

First bay (4x M.2, or 1x SATA) are/is SATA III, second bay (HDD) is SATA II, and ODD bay is SATA II.

Also, FYI, G751's secondary 2.5mm bay is SATA II, not III, according to the Intel RST tool.

Based some information on ASUS's Forum, the G751's secondary 2.5mm bay is SATAIII. Are you sure G751's secondary 2.5mm bay is SATA II, not III, according to the Intel RST tool ?

How about ASUS G751, Is it second bay (HDD) is SATAIII ? I want to update the mechanical hard disk to SSD, but I do not want the interface to limit the performance of SSD

Even if it limits the performance of the SSD, the performance vs a mechanical HDD will be MASSIVE. I used to have dual SSDs several years ago on sata II interface and it smoked mechanical hard disks easily. Unless you need constant top of the line SSD performance, Sata II still works good enough to notice extremely fast boot times and fast response.

I am certain as I ran the tool in my G751JY-DH72X, both with the included 1TB HDD (which is a 6gb model, but was reporting as SATA II) and with a samsung 840 pro which is also 6gb but reported and ran at SATA II speeds.

I'd recommend an xp941 in the pci-e m.2 and a hdd in the primary slot for the fastest setup in that machine. There are some decent sata m.2 options in the gt72 or there are converters out there.

As long as the RAID is done without that SATA II then I am fine with SSD being bottlenecked in the SATA II bay.

Definitely I will put the OS in the Super Raid 3, but I am trying to pursuit the maximum performance of gaming by install an SSD which will store the game programes on the Mechanical Disk Bay. If the GT72 and ASUS G751 both are SATA II on the mechanical disk bay, GT72 will be my preference since the graphic card can be upgraded later on. Do you know how much percentage the performance of SSD will drop down when using a SATA II port compared with the SATA III port, your reply will be highly appreciated!

Depends on the task. For small file transfers there is no difference. For straight line speed on a good disk it's 270MB/sec vs 550MB/sec.

Why they build the GT72 with the SATA 3 port as SATAII (3Gbps) if the Intel HM87 supports up to 4x SATAIII 6Gbps devices?
The 1TB HGST hard-drive is limited because the port is only SATAII not SATAIII... and the Blu-Ray drive reports SATA 1.5Gbps speed in the Intel Rapid Storage so SATAI not SATAII...
Why they didn't use all 4x SATAIII 6Gbps ports????

My understanding is they did but that all 4x SATA III ports are occupied by the M.2 slots.

Not sure if that decision was due to how they were implementing cooling for this machine but definitely would have preferred having two m.2 SATA III slots and two non-m.2. SATA III slots.

Ciggles is right, the 4x SATA III ports are the ones for the m.2 drives. You know for sure that SSD technology will be used in those slots so but its not a guarantee that people will replace the HDD in the 2.5" bay with a SSD, or put one in the optical bay.

That's a bummer. I was going to use a Samsung 850 Pro. I have here as my primary / OS drive then use a couple of m.2 drives for storage. I don't think they have 850 Pro. models yet in m.2 form factor.

    I have a GT72 2QD-1445US.

No only the EVO drives are in M.2, they are fine for most people but if your usage demands the pro then yes you will need the adapt the m.2 data link over to the 2.5".

If you have the funding then by all means get Pro since it's MLC NAND.
It will perform better and lasts longer because of higher durability.

Already had an 850 Pro.. Just need to order that M.2 to SATA adapter and a SATA power extension cable.
