Anyone else excited about the new GE66

I have been waiting eagerly in anticipation for this laptop to release. I love the design, the size, and the beautiful light bar that wraps around the front. Cant wait to get this! With that said, whats everyone's opinions on the pricing and performance. I really like the 1799 price point with the 2070 max-p to get my feet wet with MSI, and I do not feel like spending so much on a max-q model. Also, whats everyones opinion on the thermals and performance different between a 2070 max-p and a 2080 max-q super?

 

I'm not getting one but for those who are it looks really good, definitely a step up from the GE65, last year I was tossing between that and the GS65. I knew the GE65 had slightly better cooling but it gave off a mediocre look along with the meh battery life but it was back up with performance. At the time I didn't really need performance gaming anymore on mobile devices as I did most of my gaming on the desktop but the new GE66 looks pretty beefy!

So whats interesting with the RTX 2070 Super when it was released to desktop is they went with the TU104 chip as opposed to the TU106 chip found in the 2070 and 2060.

Technically in the past thats how it was:

1060 - GP106
1070 - GP104
1080 - GP104
1080Ti - GP102
Titan - GP102

Thats how you can usually distinguish the tiers.

With 20-series it was:

2060 - TU106
2070 - TU106
2080 - TU104
2080Ti - TU102
Titan - TU102

Not sure if it was intentional or lack of process but now its like this

2060 Super - TU106 (there were some rare occasion of TU104)
2070 Super - TU104
2080 Super - TU104
2080Ti - TU102
Titan - TU102


SOOOOOOOO what does that mean lol sorry for the long explanation, it means that the 2070 Super shares the same TU104 as the 2080 and 2080Super meaning the performance difference is pretty significant, with the SUPER they all got a boost except for 2080 Super.. it was good but not drastic.

Put RT aside.

2060S = +256 CUDA

2070S = +256 CUDA + TU104 die + better ram.

2080S = +128 CUDA, still TU104 + better ram.


With desktop variant an OC'd 2070S reaches stock 2080 (regular) speeds so giving you that 2080-like performance. Which wasn't attainable with the 2070 previously.


SO TL;DR if the price is good go with 2070S, if price is not that big of a difference go with the 2080 Super Max-Q.

So depending on how benchmarks go with the wattage restrictions and on top of the TU104 change with the 2070Super there may or may not be that big of a difference.

 

I love that they updated to the G76 design language. The GE75 could've used the same update.

I hate that they went with a clickpad on a high end gaming laptop. Dropping dedicated buttons is a no from me.

 

I like it all except for that obnoxious light bar. Sorry OP but I think it will probably look neat at first but the last thing I want is a colored light bar shining in my face when gaming, hopefully it can be turned

Are they using the 2060 S in this is it confirmed. ? Hope the cooling is good but not too loud.

How much more powerful is the 2070 Super over the regular 2070 ?
Is it basically the same GPU with higher clocks? Man I really hate whoever names nvidia cards, it’s stupid and confusing.

 

The 2070 Super is literally a completely different GPU than the vanilla 2070. Check the second post in this thread.

 

It’s a pretty good bump up. It’s still not RTX 2080 non-Super. But price wise it was a pretty good value. Definitely curious to see it in laptops to see what the gap in performance would be.

 

As posted and mentioned above but spec-wise its like this:

2070S = +256 CUDA + TU104 die + better ram +16 TMU +4 RT Cores +32 Tensor cores over the 2070

You get 2080-like performance, not better but a closer gap as opposed to the original.

The SUPER cards were originally intended for upcoming competition from AMD as well as replacing the SKU, meaning it was suppose to be the new line up while the old one dies off. Still supported but just means not produced anymore so new cards 2080 -> 2080Super, 2070 -> 2070Super and so forth... but now they went back to it and are still selling the previous models to fill in the gap

2080Ti > 2080Super > 2080 > 2070Super > 2070 > 2060Super > 2060

Now 2070Super is on the code name (TU104), transistor and die size as the 2080Super and 2080 regular. Only difference is listed above. So a 2080Super is considered fully unlocked, it has no more CUDA cores to be added, you cut it down you get a 2080, you cut it down you get a 2070Super if that makes sense... or they are the same apple. Take a bite and you get a 2080, take another bite and you get a 2070Super While the 2070 is an orange, take a piece off and you get the 2060Super etc...

 

The 1799$ GE66 Raider is not using the super version of the 2070 in case there was some confusion about that.

Edit: I see now the spec sheet on the msi website there is a version of this indeed with the 2070 super but I am not seeing it for pre-order any where.

I see some of the GE66 Raider 10SFS version of this with the 2070 super for pre-order but none in the states. Does anyone know availability of this version in the states?

I had that in my cart on there site actually but yea, no mention of the super version any where.

 

Here is what were looking at as far as models and pricing for the GE66. On notebookcheck its showing a 11% gain in performance unless I am missing something here. So 11% gain in graphics power for 400$... And I still do not see the 2070 super version available in the states.

 

Does anyone know if the standard 2070 version has the option for dedicated graphics only? Mux switch? I know the new Supper cards have that feature. I seen in one of the videos the GS66 has that option in the MSI software. At 1:25 it shows the Mux switch option.

 

MS-16V1 is the codename for all GS66, so there are no differences in terms of BIOS therefore you can expect the same options from it, other than bundled component options.

 

I was referring to the GE66 with the standard 2070 Max-P, will it have a mux switch/option to use only dedicated GPU. The review unit in the video is a super Max-Q which Nvidia had added the option for the new cards as standard AFAIK.

Since GE66 (MS-1541) is a new SKU and because we don't have the the unit yet so we can't check that yet. We will look into this when the shipment arrives.
