After spending hours and hours on all manner of forums: is there any last word on MS-16F2 and Kepler cards? Is the 770M still the only card working? (I've tried an MSI 670MX and it's a no go...)

Thats true. Only the GTX770M works with the old MS-16F2. But the Maxwell GTX970M works also. This is the best card for the old MS-16F2.

Wow! so to speak. Is this true irrespective of the card's manufacturer (also Dell, Clevo)?

Clevo Cards works only with modified drivers. the best choice are MSI Cards. Dell Cards make many Problems...

The 7970M was a reasonable partner for the system too but with the 970M now working it beomes the obvious choice.

No, it has to be either a Clevo or MSI card.
    DELL card has compatibility issues.
