The issue i'm referring to is an issue that has plagued some of the more recent Acer notebooks and other notebooks that are <14" with the i5/540m
The CPU throttles (even when plugged in) when the laptop gets too hot (gaming).
Does the x460dx show signs of this?
-
Only laptop that doesn't really throttle on battery is the M11x. M14x can manage it with some voodoo, but you still have to balance CPU with GPU performance to not overload the system.
If a laptop gets too hot and it throttles, that's a good thing as far as saving your components, but poor cooling design. However, if it's throttling well before 90C, then it's probably some software cooling software that's doing it and usually can be disabled or uninstalled. -
?
-
I'm pretty sure the only laptops with a throttling "problem" are the new timelinex series from Acer. Laptops are supposed to throttle but the cooling system in those laptops are so bad you lose its gaming capabilities. Acer just screwed up big time with their design, so as long as MSI did an appropriate job the x460dx should be fine, hopefully.
Although the laptop is really slim so I am having my doubts about a good gaming experience.... -
Would using an external cooling pad alleviate any overheating issues? I don't mind not being able to game on battery power. I'm planning on using an external monitor and leaving it plugged in for gaming and video editing at home.
-
Keep in mind that nobody has said this laptop has any heating issues
They are just looking at other w/ similiar specs and size.
Maybe MSI has some sexy cooling. -

Our production line was way to busy today to do much testing, but our initial testing actually showed lower temps with the Intel® i7-2630QM in it than with the standard Intel® i5-2410M. We will need to do more testing before we release it with an Intel® i7-2630QM. We did find that particularly the left side palm rest, which is directly above the nVIDIA GeForce GT 540M, does get fairly warm when running Furmark, but that is to be expected when running both a discrete video card and a 45W Intel® i7-2630QM. With normal computing the entire keyboard and palm rest area stays pretty cool.
The keyboard has virtually no flex to it. It is a real pleasure to type on. The screen is bright with very good to excellent viewing angles horizontally, and very good vertical viewing angles. The screen tilts back to about 170 degrees which makes it very easy to work with in all kinds of sitting and laying positions.
More later. -
Do you guys think you could do any game benchmarks? -
-
Looks like the i5 model is in stock again on newegg
It's so hard restraining myself from buying... I need a review T_T. -
What type of hard drive caddy would you need on this laptop to fit another hard drive in the odd slot? 9.5mm or 12.7mm?
-
it's also on amazon now. Free shipping over there! =) -
throttle no throttle?
-
-
-
Ahh, you are right.
I didn't notice that, my bad =X -

I pulled the plug on this bad boy today from newegg. Shipped out today with ups 3 day shipping. Hopefully it'll be here by tuesday and I can get a review up. I also bought a 64gig crucial m4 to go with it so I can see how it runs with a ssd. Unfortunately I am at football camp now so I don't have much time but I will try to get a review of it up ASAP once I get it
-
Awesome!
I look forward to reading your review -

@paladin44:
It's still not an option on your website, so I presume the Quad core DX version is still being tested? Your most recent post has me intrigued - I'm holding out for this upgradeAlso, waiting for a review, but it might be a while before pro reviews get out.

I find it surprisising there are no hands on reviews of this laptop. I bit the bullet and ordered one from newegg this morning. I was surprised it was still for sale. I went for the following one for 849.00 Newegg.com - MSI X460DX-006US Notebook Intel Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) 14" 6GB Memory 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
From what i can tell, though it doesn't say on newegg this model does have bluetooth. This and the 2 usb 3.0 ports as well as sandy bridge are the primary reasons i purchased it - to replace an acer 4820tg (which by the way has been great). Hope it was the right choice. i would like it to get at least 5 hours of battery life and using the usb 3.0 ports i can use an external drive to run steam games (hopefully this will work well).
I will put a seagate momentus xt 500gb drive which dramatically improved the performance of my acer unless i decide to get an ssd and find an optical drive bay/caddy for another hard drive. If anyone finds a hands on review in english or with benchmarks and not in english please post links. Ill be able to answer some questions around the 23rd of august. -
Amazon has the i3 version in stock
and J&R has the i5 for $849.99 w/ free shipping. -
FYI - the link i provided 2 posts ago is in stock at newegg, both the 849 and the 749 versions. i am guessing that with the quadcore processor and the discrete graphics it was too much draw for a small power block and creating too much heat for the cooling. Has anyone seen an option for the quad core processor with 540m for sale?

I just need a review and make sure it's not as fail as the new Acer timelinex series -

EDIT: was going to post the unboxing video but you beat me to it!
And Xoticpc now has them in stock!

HOLY CRAP!!!
I just found a megathread of information.
Unfortunately it's in a different language... Google translate helps!

The op has not made any mention of throttling or gaming performance but has received many questions about it. I bet he will post some results later today.
And apparently he is going to do a full out review. -
yes with no throttling issue this lappy will b in a different league from the other failed co.
-
Surprising (and disappointing) that XoticPC isn't offering the 2630QM upgrade for the DX version... especially after they were all set to do the same upgrade on the most recent ASUS U36 (though they weren't ultimately able to fulfill those orders thanks to ASUS using a soldered CPU). I wonder if PowerNotebooks will wind up offering it?
-
Also, the forum posted by D3vo didn't present anything particularly useful so far... a full review will be nice though. For those too lazy to to do it themselves, this is the google translate link:

It's better than nothing. -
Indeed, it is better than nothing... nice to see that there are at least a few other people interested in this laptop. I was merely suggesting that for the time being that thread didn't really offer any new information, so it's not like a must read for the people who come here with interest.

Any chance of a final review? -

All 3 versions should be available by this Tuesday. We have been shipping the i3 and i5 version since last Thursday.

It's just tough buying a laptop with no reviews.
Also, there was some activity at
Test MSI X460DX - Forum Notebookcheck.pl
If anyone is interested. -

I wouldnt expect anything more then 6 hours with normal use and decent screen brightness. 5900mAh is an average battery. Especially with an avg discharge 7-10 mW usage
-
Eh, that is incorrect.

Finally received the MSI X460! Right off the bat, I’ve decided to run some benchmarks, as well as tests for throttling. Only positive results so far, laptop stays remarkably cool under light gaming (Starcraft 2 and BF2 on medium settings). My next post will probably be actual laptop temps and performance. Keep an eye out for it! The battery seems to be a hit or miss for buyers according to other posts. Luckily, my MSI runs for about 6 hours on light usage. The workmanship on this beauty is the best I’ve seen. Brushed aluminum <3. The keyboard’s decent, but I’m mainly going to be using an external keyboard, so not a problem for me. The screen isn’t spectacular, but it’ll do the job.
So far I’d give the X460 an 9/10; everything has been great so far, let’s just hope I don’t run into troubles anytime soon. -

Anybody know if it supports Sata III?
I am interested in buying a ocz vertex 3 ssd and install it but I am not sure if it supports it. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The Intel chipset on all current Sandy Bridge laptops supports SATA III on ports 0 & 1. The hard drive is on port 0 so it will support STAT III, but the ODD is on port 2 so it will not support a SATA III drive in the optical bay.
Any news on the x460?
