My friend got his GE70 a while back after loving my GT based White book. Since a year after he bought it, it stopped getting hot at the heatsink and instead the CPU overheats, same with the GPU, I replaced his heatsink and now the GPU doesn't overheat but the CPU still did, even at 900mhz, finally while he played games, I did this....

Game was playable with temps in the 70s, do I need to try another heatsink?

That's a pretty annoying solution considering all he needs is a repaste.

Thats funny... I've tried 2 heatsinks, you think I haven't tried repasting?

have you made sure the mounting pressure is on point? You'd be surprised how big of a difference that makes. Also, what paste? How much paste? Is the fan running at spec?

Mounting pressure is tight, again, the heat is making it halfway down the heatpipe, then suddenly stops. hence why i attached a heatsink to the original heatpipe(yes, i put it on top of the OEM heatsink, no cutting or mounting mods, minus shoe laces)

I have 7 fans i've tried(also because i keep getting extra fans) so the fan is fine, I'm using IC Diamond 24 Thermalpaste. Using quite a bit, enough to over the entire die and a lil then some

The original heatsink stopped cooling the GPU and CPU
The replacement number 1 now cools the GPU again but not the CPU still
Ordered a second replacement... unsure whats going on

Maybe try using less thermal paste. You just want to have enough to evenly spread across the chip.

tried a bunch of different levels

but it's been proven you really can't use "too" much, but you can be stupid about it

even so it doesn't account for the heat transferring partway down the heatpipe then stopping

Potentially a damaged heatpipe? Have you tried replacing the heatpipes?

Does the heatsink look bent or warped at all? That could cause issues as well.

Sorry, the heatpipes don't LOOK bent but it just takes a microfracture. i think i have 2 bad heatsinks since the first one was gpu and cpu, but the second fixed the GPU but not the CPU, changing back and fourth verifies this behavior and wastes 100's of dollars in thermal paste xD

I think it's the issue, just want some other input, anything else i could have missed?

    it works normal again

2 bad assemblies in a row!

Glad to hear! - what are the temps now with the working heatpipes?

Down from 98c and throttled to 900mhz at 10 watts to 86C at 3.2ghz at 45 watts

GPU is down from 90c to 75c

Odd I'd have two bad units in a row, the performance drop was major, I've never had a laptop do this before, is this common?

It's not a common issue, I don't think. If you got them from the same place, maybe there was something that happened in shipping if they weren't packaged properly. Otherwise, just might be bad luck.
