It’s almost been a year since I’ve purchased my MSI GX600 and if I have to be honest; My MSI GX600 has given me more stress than anything else.

Before I purchased the MSI GX600 I read all the reviews. All the reviews were positive so I decided to take a chance. Bad move.

I’ve used MSI motherboards for my computer system builds and haven’t had any problems with them. The MSI GX600 laptop is another story.

Here’s a list of the problems that I’m experiencing with my GX600.

    1) The system freezes at least a few times a week. At that point I have to unplug the power and remove the battery. It always seems to freeze when I’m doing something important. I RMA’d the laptop once but the problem didn’t happen when they had it. I really hate the laptop because of this issue.

    2) I’m only getting 13 minutes of use from a fully charged battery. After 13 minutes I get a low battery warning, 30 seconds later the laptop shuts down.

    3) When I connect headphones to the jack only one side plays. I reinstalled the audio drivers, checked to see if mono or anything like that was chosen. No luck. I wanted to use headphones with the laptop while I’m on the train. Having only one side working ruins it. Both laptop speakers appear to be working and I tried the several different headphones. Oh well

    4) The laptop didn’t wear well. One of the latches that holds on the screen broke off (I don’t know when it happened). The “MSI” badge on the front fell off (LOL!), and in general the laptop looks really old (even though the laptop wasn’t used everyday).

    5) The system fans go on full blast for no reason (at the desktop with nothing running). When that happens the system will freeze. I purchased a laptop cooler which seemed to have helped for a few weeks. Now the laptop locks up and freezes even while using the laptop cooler.

    6) The Wireless range is about 10 feet. And requires line-of-site to operate. My living room is about 12' away from where I have the router. There aren't any walls blocking my router, just the desk that I have my PC on is between the router and the GX600. From the living room, less than 12' away I'm unable to establish a wireless network connection with the GX600. I had planned to use the GX600 wireless connectivity in my living room, kitchen, and the bathroom. No luck. The only room where the wireless works is in the same room where the router is located. I might as well be using a cable :-(

If I could do it all over again I would have never gotten the MSI GX600. Spending $1,800 on a buggy cheap laptop doesn’t do anything for me except raise my blood pressure. The plan was to keep the GX600 for 3 years before I replaced it. It isn’t even a year yet and I’m already looking at other laptops.

Wow, that's pretty awful. I was looking into MSI laptops, but this really doesn't make them sound attractive.

Regarding points #2, 3 and 6: isn't that grounds for another RMA? That's definitely not how any of those components is supposed to work.

I think you just got a really bad laptop. You should've returned it and got a new one with your warranty.

recently purchased a MSI-1651, I have not had problems but time will tell. Does anyone else have personal experinces with MSI notebooks in the GX600 series a year or so out?

I used to have a GX600 for approx. 6 months that I ended up selling for a Gateway, but actually regretted it, as in my opinion the GX600 was built much more better. Also for the size, weight, performance, and price it was the BEST BANG for the BUCK at the time. I ended up selling the Gateway after about 3 months. I tried looking for another USED GX600 Extreme but there are none to be found where I have looked for. When I had my GX600 I did NOT have any problems with it. Again this is my experience. God Bless :)

Not that easy. You can only get a new Unit after its been RMA’d twice. The issue that I have is intermittent and will not show up (when the techs are looking at it) unless the techs are willing to take the thing home. So from an MSI standpoint I do not have a problem.

I'm going to try to RMA it again for those reasons. I'll keep everyone posted. My advice is to stay far away from MSI laptops.

You want to buy my GX600? I have a 7200 rpm drive in it. Who knows? You might not have any problems with it :) I'll let it go for $800 ( I paid $1,800)

The GX600 did offer the most performance and smallest size. That along with a keypad were the reasons that I picked the GX600.

Actually I would consider it, but $800 is too expensive :D If you lower the price drastically I *may* consider it. :D but it would not be till early next year.

I usually can't take one experience as the sign of how good the overall quality of a company's products are. Take the fact that my friend's Nintendo DS died on him a couple months after getting it, I would not say stay far away from Nintendo, as my DS (old 2004 version) is still going find, despite numerous drops and other damage inducing incidents).

JDELUNA seemed to have a good experience with the GX600, I would like to hear from more people who have owned the notebook or other similar MSI lines.

I agree with what you are saying but everything that I’ve gathered in regards to GX600 ownership experience suggests mixed experiences. I’m far from being the only person that has had problems with the GX600. To each his own, but my ownership experience with an MSI laptop is more than enough for me to not consider an MSI laptop purchase in the future. I’m just not willing to take that gamble again.

Thanks for the annual update of your laptop, sorry you haven't had good experience with it. I have seen some negative feedback on the GX600 as well, so you're definitely not the only one with problems. I took a gamble and got a GX620, and while it has been fine so far, I've only had it for two months. Let's see if I can say the same thing a year from now.

The GX620 is a good unit. I would imagine that MSI has worked out all of the bugs with the GX600/610. Good luck.
