Any thoughts?
Can't find screen resolution and it's not available in store, online only.
-
Odd, i have that laptop.
Its under the name of advent 6555 -
What do you mean under the name of Advent 6555?
And yeh it matches the 6555 spec for spec I guess but still... I might not need to buy the MSI one now and save myself a bit more money =p -
Following reading this thread I have purchased an 7555gx! So I thought I should sign up and tell you my experience...
bought from curry's using a voucher code for £855 inc vat and delivery. Lappy turned up 48 hours later. nice!
First the two well known bad points. The keyboard layout is poor, especially the right shift key. Get used to using the left one. Secondly the screen is actually fine but the default setup is shocking. 2 mins adjusting the setting revealed the screen is in fact much better than most suggest.
Yes the res is low but only in comparison to other screens. It is not to low that it causes any sort of problem. I honestly don't yearn for a better screen, and I thought I would.
Performance wise there is quite simply no better machine for the money. NONE. The quad core processor may only be 2ghz but its hard to think of any app that would benefit from more raw speed, which won't benefit instead from the extra cores. This didn't use to be the case but most mainstream apps support the cores in their latest versions.
For example I use 3D cad, downloading their latest patches and support for quad made a huge difference.
As for gaming what can I say that you wouldn't expect? The HD3850 is a match for almost any other mobile card in existence. a top end sli setup will deliver a few more frames but its hard to notice the difference. Race driver Grid WILL feel the same at 60 fps or 200fps.
3Dmark06 score is 11,000 straight out the box. windows score is 5.9 on all except the HDD, which is 5.4
The MSI725gt is £200 more. The only decision is whether the better screen is worth that premium for you.
In conclusion, there really is no better value serious gaming laptop around that beats the 7555 gs. It's good to see proper frame shifters finally selling for firmly below the £1000 mark. £855 is fantastic value for money.
NB - if you do buy one you should switch to vista 64, of course -
)
But yeah, its a fantastic machine, and dont you mean 4850?
The screen is blasted with contrast if you ask me, a few tweaks and were set.
Dont forget to get the latest drivers for ATI, you will need mobility modder but its well worth it!
And check out the realtek pannel, you can make the laptop sound much better too
And your oem key will work with 64 bit (mine does) just choose to install after the installation! -
This one doesn't seem to have a blu ray drive but has a 320GB HDD instead :S odd.
-
I'd have storage over blueray anyday to be fair lol
.
-
To be fair the bigger HDD is worth it imo. -
-
Hehe, yeah advent invested in a fantastic product.
They have a few MSI's actually, thats a good partnership right there -
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
-
Yes the only thing 1920 x 1200 has over a 1680 x 1050 is a better looking desktop. Other than that, they're impractical.
-
I can add a little more about the screen now I've lived with the laptop for a while...
I can see how it is easy to criticise by any enthusiast. Playing with the settings does improve things, but when you compare it to a decent panel you can see the colours are not as strong. The general image quality and sharpness is fine.
The resolution is not an issue at all - anyone that says it is, is putting geek credentials ahead of being realistic! I know this as I use the lappy mostly for 3D cad - if the res is good enough to get all the tools on screen along with the model I'm working on then it's big enough for anything. Certainly any game.
And most importantly it has an HDMI out for connecion to my 42" plasma. Once connected it will output full 1080p res and still runs crysis all settings tuned up smoothly. I'm making PS3 owning friends quite jealous in fact
So yes the 'weak' spot is the screen, but it would have to be absolutely appalling to make this laptop not worth buying. And even as a designer I can live with it just fine!
In fact I think thats the main reason to buy this over the MSI. Buy the Advent, save £300, put the £300 pounds towards a big old 1080p telly. Much better investment -
Actually, the colours are grand if you go ahead and manually tweak them (Y), so you can change your gammas contrasts etc in the ATI pannel, and the display does come out real strong.
-
Is the Advent available in the US?
-
Was it ever available in the US? Only MSI series were if i recall.
-
The chronic shortage of supply of MSI based Advent systems suggests it was a 'toe in the water' excercise too.
Having said that who cares? If you live in the states the MSI is cheaper than our advert varient anyway!!
The really great news is that now its possible to buy a serious gaming laptop for less than £1000 all other companies will be treating that as the new target, and prices should at last start to spiral down. HD 4850 and mobile quad are both very expensive components in a laptop. Mostly becasue only a handful of companies actually use those components at the moment. -
The 7555 has been superceded by the 8555, plenty in stock at the mo.
Bought one yesterday. -
If it is selling for £100 more its about time they popped the blu-ray back in!
How do you find the laptop by the way? If you've installed crysis you have probably been pleasantly suprised already -
Ordered it yest and am getting it Monday. The 7555 was £999 as well, then was reduced when win 7 came out. The 8555 has w7.
I got mine for £919 with a currys voucher, I think you can get it for £950 with a currys voucher now. -
That said for only £70 quid more you get an extra 180gb hd so probably about fair!
I do think they are shooting themselves in the foot by releasing basically the SAME laptop so many times. If you keep changing the name its hard to build up a reputation.
Good choice of lappy though, welcome to the 'Crysis for less than £1000 club' -
The graphics card has changed from the 7555. It's now the 4670.
-
And thats definately the 17 inch model?
-
-
I just checked and its true! Thats shocking. The laptops still good value for money of course, but its not ahead of the crowd at that price for the lesser graphics card. And that is taking into account the full 1GB graphics memory on the 4670.
3D MARK 05:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 - 15419
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 - 12614
Not exactly progress on Advent's part is it?
To sum up the 8555gx will absolutely not perform for gaming on a par with the earlier 7555gx. 320 stream prossesors vs 800 makes a difference. Despite the extra GDDR3 memory you can see the difference in the 3D mark scores. I would expect this card to feel out of date at least 6-12 months before the 4850. For a newer laptop at the same price point thats unfair. -
I may be grabbing one of the few Advent 7775 GX laptops that currys have got left. (£799 less £50 if i get it online)
Is it definately worth getting you reckon? No overheating probs?
thanks -
There isn't many issues with the 725 so I doubt there's much with this.
Can't beleive it's dropped 200 already it's only been 2-3 months... it's a bargain for sure no matter what, remember to get an equivalent from Alienware or so it's £1600 minimum
As I said before, I will get this laptop in a heartbeat if it weren't for the below average screen and crappy keyboard. However, if my laptop breaks and cannot be repaired I will also buy the 7555/8555 in a heartbeat as a "replacement" (temporary) until I find something else better. -
If you can get it for £750 do i in a heartbeat. The 7555gx would be worth paying £900 for INSTEAD of the newer 8555gx.
With the 8555gx they are cost cutting, simple as that. If thats their plan for the future of advent branded msi's then it could be that the 755gx is the last worth buying. -
just purchased it online
I had went into currys in store to ask them to check their UK stock on their database. According to their check they had about 5 or 6 in total in the UK around Nottingham or Derby area. That was yesterday so hopefully they wont have all sold out since then!
Does it come with lots of bloatware?

Err, thats rediculous lol.
Happy that you got the machine, its a beaut performer!
I could say, get to know realtec control pannel (if it has it)
And adjust screen contrasts, hues, sats etc through catalyst, it can be a fairly nice screen.
I had also to burn my recovery disks so you may need the same, should be in the gadgets section also if you cant find it (will check when im at home tonight.)
Now enjoy ripping crysis at native on very high, doesnt struggle -
Could you do a review with pics silversurfer? im thinking of getting one but am humming and harring.
cheers -
What ya humming and haring about xed, if you want anything answering just post away, i have the first release which seems to be identicle, except i have a blue ray player.
-
its a great laptop.
I would say the screen is its weakest aspect.
The viewing angle is imo quite poor. The picture is a lot different if you are viewing only slightly off the optimum level. In this respect the DELL i had was better.
This can be noticeable in games. I tried Risen and the sky looked a bit weird but i dunno i need to do more tests because when i started Dragon Age the graphics were absolutely gorgeous!! Am getting good fps on pretty much maximum settings
Has eaten every game ive chucked at it so far. (risen, witcher, dragon age) -
vista sp 2 is out. should i install? btw if i see that problem i had with the display ill try take a screenshot and upload it.
Getting 60 fps most settings (tho it was indoors) on maximum in Dragon Age -
Just phoned Currys Customer Services. They confirmed that there are 105 7555 GXs in stock. Also confirmed that by using the code XMas5 you can get this laptop for £712!!!!
-
-
Well done silver Surfer! Glad you liked it, I sorta knew when I posted others would end up buying
Anyone else interested BUY IT NOW because they are nearly all gone. The 8555 gx is not the same perofrmer as the 6555/7555 because they got rid of the pricey yet amazing 4850 mobility.
Anyone even considering it needs to move quickly.
I can confirm that so far nothing played at native res, all settings high has slowed this thing. From photos uts also obvious it IS the MSI chassis, its identical. Got a few cheapo Advent stickers, but luckily they fall off during cleaning so no one needs to know where u bought it -
Just ordered my 7555 GX
£712.47
-
That looks a solid deal

Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
ugh, i just saw this deal and it just killed me, no international credit cards means im SOL for getting one, it sucks cause im living over here with a card still registered to an overseas address, anyone wanna show some love to another faithful NBR member, theres two of us in desperate need.
Actually gentlemen, i dont know if this applies to anyone else, but they will accept international credit cards, apparently all you really need is a uk address. -
I should be an advent affiliate. Except I wouldn't know how to sell the 7555gx's replacement as its rubbish...
Anyway, good choice! Great price. Earlier this year anyone would have said that sort of lappy was £1k plus easy. -
Can you not send money by bank transfer? Or cheque??
How much is msi gt725 where u are? -
That's true to a certain extent. If you walked into any of their stores, of course they will honour their offers (using international CC). It is the ONLINE ordering system that is f**ed up. I can't even create the billing address of my country (for account registration), so how do I even proceed with the rest of the order? Even if I have a valid UK address (my friend's), I can't even get past the 1st hurdle. Damnit...!
PLUS, the offer price for the ADVENT 7555 GX now is £699.97!!! OMG...! I need to get this lappy!
One more thing, they don't accept cash/transfers for online orders....
Hmmm... since Automatikjack is in the UK, can you help out?Just wondering....

Just popped into Currys and saw the new price. Gave customer services a call and changed my order and got the laptop for £664.97 with the discount code XMas5
