I recently saw in a thread that it seems like it is possible to upgrade the GPU of the GT680R from a 460M to a either 470/480/485/ or 560M, which is great IMO as I am really getting fed up at having to buy a new laptop every 2 years or so just for a new GPU. My question is this, I live near Vancouver BC, Canada, and I am wondering if anyone here possibly knows anyone that can do those kind of services near my location. I saw MxM Upgrade, but unfortunately it seems like they are located in Europe. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you guys.

live with it. 460m is good enough to last you for years.
maybe u can try overclocking -
Bring it to local comp shop to try or google local notebook repair service
-
@itcomic, I did just that, and it seems like none can do it unfortunately. I'll do what you said and try to find google local notebook repair next.
@ limpei1 already overclocked mines, and I know that the 460M will last me for at least a few years, I'm just inquiring to see what options I have when it won't be able to play the newest games at max so I don't have to buy a new laptop as I said in my first post, so don't respond with "live with it" cause I know I have to "live with it" already. -

No, don't take it to a local repair shop...
Just think for a second how many high end gaming laptops there are in your area and imagine how much those guys would really know what they are doing.
I would say find a forum member you trust who is local.
I think there is going to be a version with a better card, so you may not have to worry, though i can't remember what it is.. -
Neither the GX680, nor GT683, nor GT780 will have anything better to offer. The only option would be to upgrade the card yourself. The slot is MXM3.0b.
You need to check these things:
1. Wattage of your PSU. You might need to buy a more powerful one.
2. Check whether the BIOS allows to boot custom graphics cards. (only way to do this is to put in another card and see if it boots)
3. Get a picture of your current card and its heatsink and compare it to the card you want to upgrade to, sou you would know what kind of modifications to the heatsink would be required. -

Your advice wasn't bad, however:
MSI has been extremely good with this in the past, including full BIOS support for 9800m GT, g92 and g94 based cards on a laptop mainboard that was NEVER released in any country with anything other than the 9600m GT or ati 3650 (gx630).
Better yet:
a) if you can find a side pic of the new card, take out your parts and look
b) simply ask around and find out if a laptop released with both your oem card and the newer one was also released with 2 different heatsinks
c) be prepared for slight heatsink modifications with:
-a few sheets of copper, different thicknesses
-a few sheets of thermal padding, different thicknesses
-metal shears, wire cutters, pliers, or a dremel
MOST IMPORTANT:
Have a VGA cable and external monitor ready!!
Good luck to anyone going for a 470m, 485m, 6970 or 6950!
...oh, BTW I have no doubt the 5870 will work...if anyone would want that...

I have a 470m
Anyone in Jersey have a gt680? or a gx660 for that matter? -
ATI HD5870 graphics card, the GTX 485M graphics card I have successfully upgraded. Very few heatsinks need modification. But I did not do. I did not just assembly. Everything is normal computer is starting up, the screen image is coming, everything is normal. But unfortunately the computer does not recognize the video card driver and setup happening. In other words, can be installed on a standard display driver. I think an appropriate BIOS update is necessary. Accordingly, the GTX485M graphics card is not fully compatible with the model of the MSI GX660R I can say.

Did you try manually forcing the driver to install using the "have disk" method in device manager?

More pictures can be found in this message. In the meantime, the video card Clevo P150HM removed. Do you have another suggestion?
-
Try the latest drivers.
NVIDIA DRIVERS 270.61 WHQL
How do you want to cool the backside vram? -
Did not do anything for the rear side. Vram did not put on the thermal pad. I have mounted on the existing video card heatsink only. That's it.
Came from the screen image, the video card driver does not recognize only. Everything else is working normally. If the drive is properly installed the game, testing programs and other things I can do. -
I had considered doing this but all sounds to confusing now xD
-
The latest 270.61-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql driver tried to but did not change the result. Modifications for the heatsink have to necessarily require the dremel. You can see all pictures of the stages step by step upgrade.
I think an appropriate system BIOS update is necessary. I repeat, accordingly the GTX485M graphics card is not fully compatible with the model of the MSI GX660R I can say.

But in Games whats happen ?
-
@Liberty
Nice try ... you can see if somebody is willing to customize the BIOS. There was a guy in here who do such things ... I forgot his username ...try to search it.
@patkilla99
Nothing will happen in games ... when you don't have the GPU recognized, the games will run at minimum details if run at all ... -

Wait, but this is all the gx660?
Then why is it posted in this thread, for the gt680, not the nearly identical one for the gx660?
PS: I think the gt680 will support more of these cards. -
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Thats gt680. And yes, would you want to try the 485m in it please?
-
I have gt680 and inside gtx 460m. I'm from Turkey, and could you please help me? I want 6970 or gtx 480 or something like better. Thank you..

Hi, may I know if nvidia quadro cards (i.e 5000m, 4000m, 3000m, FX3800, FX2800) can works in the GT680R? Thanks.
-
FX3800 has been reported to work in the GX660 so it should work in the GT680R also. Though the 4000m has been reported not to work in the MSI 16F2 so it won't work neither in the GT680R
