So I finally got my GX640-098US in the mail

however, after some casual gaming i have these temperatures:
    GPU:

    Idle: 64-65C
Counter Strike: Source - 71-73C (high)
    WoW: mid 80s (high)

i've read some posts here about other people's GPU temps..and mine are much hotter than those people's

How can I try to lower my GPU temp, without having to buy anything?
What's the max temp this GPu can handle?

I wouldn't say those are much hotter than other peoples' for the stock GX640 - maybe a couple of degrees at the most, and that could easily have to do with ambient temperatures.

I believe the maximum temperature is something like 100 degrees, but that's for the shaders, I believe - people have reported thermal shutdown occurring at 100 degrees for the shaders, at which point MemIO was ~110.

As such, I'd be uncomfortable with MemIO above 100 degrees, or with DispIO/Shader above 90 degrees. I've only seen those kinds of temperatures while running Furmark.

Also, you probably should've posted this in the GX640 temperature thread.

the idle seems kind of high but everything else seems fine if you're running on stock clocks

If you are afraid of heat you can try to underclock your card, the games you have talked don't need much power. The game will have less FPS (or it will be the same if FPS>60) and the graphics card will heat less.

Anything under 90C is considered good. No need to worry.

If you really want to see how hot your GPU gets, run Furmark. Your idles seem high, and I can imagine that a Furmark test will reach well into the high 90s after a couple of minutes.

my temps are at 99 deg when playing new games, and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

i wouldn't worry about ur temps

I just my GPU Core up to 108 deg Celsius playing SC2.

It didn't crash or run slow or anything.. I just had HWMonitor running in the background and it says my max temp is at 108.

That is too hot isn't it?

Yes thats def a bit to hot. And brings up issues with either the fan or the heatsink not touching properly.

Well isn't it possible that it incorrextly measured the temperature? I just ran Furmark for about five minutes and temps were steady at about 95

Update: I played another 15 minute game and the temperature never got above 88 degrees.

Really this is no offence, but Please tell me you didnt buy this Beast to play CS, goddamn CS is for antique P4 systems.

Does anyone know what the thermal threshold is for these cards? I've been searching and can't seem to find it. I read somewhere that the 5850 desktop version is somewhere around 125C. Since the mobility is based on a different chip, it may be different. Anyone?

It is tad bit lower, a guy with a GX640, i dont remember who had titled his vertically and all, had his GPU touch 108, he told he had auto shutdown at 110, so 110 is the limit, But dont push it :p

Well, someone with a G73 noted that shutdown occurs with MemIO past 110°C, so yeah, that's definitely the shutdown threshold.

If that's shut down threshold then am I safe to assume as long as my Mem I/O isn't exceeding 100 I'm alright? My max temps seem to be 83/99/88.

The max for the shaders and display I/O are probably 100? Don't know how youd get them to 100 before you hit 110 on the memory to test though.

It would be interesting to test, but no-one likes having their GPU at such temperatures, and indeed it seems like in most cases the shutdown would be triggered by MemIO.

Personally, I hit 88/105/94 max running FurMark for 15 minutes; I'm not sure it would hit 110 running for longer, but I'm pretty sure I could get my laptop to shut down if I ran Prime95 at the same time or turned up the heating.

I personally is kind of phobic with 100+ temps, so Esc key is the way to paradise, :p

I just get worried because I'm running an i7-quad when the default config is an i5-dual. I'm always a bit higher in temps than the rest of you. Hopefully a modded bottom panel will help.

Dont worry the extra 10W, 20W wont have a heavy heat burden. And for modded back panel, Death is the person to contact, :p

playing BC2 now, its around 90C

Should I worry that the GPu will fry within the next few months if I keep playing it like that?

Naaa, while high 90C i'd say is the highest i'd allow it to go, AMD work some very good heat resistant transistor tech so it should be ok :D.
