I got my 6970m. I installed it. I then forgot to remove the old drivers but the card was detected fine and there was no problems.
The card worked fine.
I then decided to remove all the ATI driver and use Crap Cleaner and Driver Sweeper to remove the crap.
Now when I try to reinstall the drivers the card is not being detected.
Can someone help with this?
-
Great news Pras!! There is hope still for me to decide to buy a 6970 for my GX660. Did you take any pictures or document what you did? Did you have to modify the heatsink?
Anyways, have you tried to force install the driver? Go into device manager, find the card, update driver, let me browse my computer, then locate it by searching where u have it saved? -
Hi Talon, I figured out the manual install bit in the end and then clicking on "let me pick from a list of drivers". Is there a way to install CCC as I have tried to install the utility but it won't install.
But the performance is excellent!!! I can run Crysis Warhead on max and it runs so smoothly. BUT heat is a big problem. Whilst playing Warhead the temp reached 94c. However when I use turbo fan it drops to 80c. When I run burnin on Furmark it reaches 96c and at that point I stop it because I am to scared to run it any more. With turbo fan it runs at 91c. Idle is about 48c. I did modify the heatsink using the pictures on post one but I don't think it was worth it. All I did was pull out the 5870m, modify the heatsink and then stick in the 6970m. Easy! -
The heat sounds acceptable to me. Good idle temps, and those loads temps in game while using the turbo fan seem pretty good. There are people on here with 5870m and hit higher gaming load temps. Honestly I don't think 94C is even that bad for such a powerful gfx card. That was a normal load temp for my old 260m in my Asus G51. Did you replace the thermal pads on the heatsink, or did you just use the old ones? Maybe replacing the thermal pads would help lower the temps a bit. I'm thinking I'm going to take the jump and buy the 6970m this week. I should be able to get some cash out of my 5870 to help offset the cost a bit.
As far as installing CCC, are you making sure that you're downloading the correct software?

You can buy the 6970m from Pkhetan.
BUT my question is: why bother changing to a 6970m when you could OC the 5870m to probably the same heat and performance levels as the 6970m? -
I forgot to add that I am using a Clevo 6970m. On GPU Z it is shown to be a Clevo part.
Modded driver works:
AMD Catalyst 11.5a Hotfix - Guru3D.com Forums -
Glad to see it run on an MSI system!
-
I'm thinking that even with an OC I couldn't hit 6970m performance levels even at stock. Since we both have a 920xm, could you run a BC2 multiplayer test with high settings 1080p and tell me what you're getting?
-
I don't have the game! But I will see if I can get it.
Here are some figures from other benchmarks:
3dmark06 15350
3dmark11 3050
3dmark vantage GPU 10725
Crysis GPU 23fps CPU 24fps
WEI 7.6 & 7.6
I will be doing some mains power tests to see if the 180w PSU is enough.
Power tests:
41w on idle
46w to open Firefox to this page.
Prime95 116w to 123w. Went to 127w for less than a second.
Furmark 167w average but 175w for a very short period.
Batman Arkham 130w to 150w -
After running Furmark and using HWINFO32 I notice that the GPU (TS1) MEMIO and GPU (TS2) Shader were over 100c!
What does this mean? -
Is that with turbo fan on? I'm guessing that probably isn't too good and will probably cause failure over time. Stop using furmark? Why not just see what games load your temps to? Most games don't produce temps that furmark shows.
-
Thats with turbo fan. I will stop using Furmark until I have got some Fujipoly pads and I will also check the heatsink as I am certain that there was a slight gap between the die and heatsink. I did cause a little damage to the one of the smaller pads.
-
My guess is that if you replace the thermal pads and ensure no gaps, those temps will come down a fair bit.
-
I took out the 6970m and inspected it. I took off the black plastic border on the die part of the heatsink. There is a gap between the die and the heatsink but its very small. I added more paste this time and I ran furmark for 20 minutes with turbo fan on.
The previous readings were 91-92c Thermal Diode, 100c MEMIO and 108c Shader.
The results now. 82- 83c Thermal Diode, 89c MEMIO and 89c Shader Wow!!!!!!! -
Nice change in temps there. So after all of this, would you say it has been worth it? Is there a noticeable change between the 5870 and 6970 in games? I flashed my bios to the 1.15v bios posted and I am OC to 860/1080 so far stable in games. I'll try to go farther later. Also what type of GPU heatsink do you have? Do you have the 3 pipe or 2 pipe? I just put in my 2nd HDD bracket assembly, and noticed I too have the 3 copper piping assembly on the GPU. So Forge isn't the only one with that upgrade? I'm wondering if I'd be able to keep the 6970m cooler because of that.
-
So 17% is not worth 300GBP i think
Waiting for 7XXXm cards now with 50%gain.......damn.....it'll take loooong time
HAHA -
What i hope is 7xxx will be 32nm = less heat (i hope as well) -
. I think the upgrade is worth it. I could get about £200 for my card and therefore I have only spent £100.
SVL7,
What are your temps like???
I would love to OC my CPU and GPU but this would be a big problem in the single fanned GX660R!! -
if i coulD get 200GBP for my 5870 then YES - IT'S WORTH ! -
To be honest you don't need to overclock this card at all... the performance is massive. -

Are not the other forum members here the ones who got it to work fully? We already knew about your page.
And its not as interesting as 470 USD If thats your game and you think you can go around making vague posts to your website just because your name is black (for some reason) I for one am not letting it happen. -
-
Have you ask him about the process of ordering and getting the card? I think after you heard what he have to said you will pass. -
I ordered my card through him and he was great! Very fast delivery. There is also 6 months warranty through Clevo.
-
I drilled holes underneath the fan and I cut out the slots under the gpu heatsink. All I got for my troubles was an increase in temps!!!
-

Furthermore I wouldn't doubt he can RMA hardware to clevo directly.
He seems to be a very busy man, and if he wasn't quite as much you'd see that he works hard to withhold his reputation on these forums.
Whats wrong with telling someone where they can buy the card, in the MSI section, and not the marketplace is its AGAINST THE FORUM RULES unless you are a retailer because its shameless self promotion.
Regardless of how nice the people at mxm upgrade are, their info is incomplete in a way that directs users to their marketplace, and not other alternative sources or even models of MXM cards. This is what I have a problem with.
I simply think they have realized that free info and sales are somewhat mutually exclusive and they may or may not have decided which direction to go in at this point.
Its really effective to not trust people when you're doing a transaction with them, right?
Awesome, dude but OK...
I will NOT be accepting vague implications about scams and online selling.
You think he is trying to scam everyone? OK, then you need to say "I THINK PKHETAN IS TRYING TO SCAM EVERYONE"
I refuse to let you imply that without saying it.
Then I'm sure it will be brought up why he has in fact made so many successful transactions...
I don't ever suggest that a member here is a scammer, unless they are very new. I was NOT suggesting that MXM-upgrade will try to scam you because that would be pretty ridiculous.
People need to learn the difference between NOT business, take you money and run attempt transactions (which should be obvious) and SIMPLE decent/indecent business. -
Sorry for that, i didn't know. Just wanted to compare, that's it, we all want to get the cards as cheapest as we can get.
who's the admin here anyways?, i would like to delete my thread. -

I don't know what thread you speak of...
Whats against the rules is self promotion E. G. links to your own website. -

I have noticed that the audio does not work from the HDMI output. The laptop thinks it has a DVI connector!!
Does anyone know how to resolve this? -
-
-
I have installed the ones of the Realtek site and it did not work. The latest ones are in the 11.5a drivers.
-
I have upgraded my gx660r as well with the 6970m (I have the 720QM cpu).
I had problems with the HDMI video output and with the audio output. The picture was in the wrong ratio and I was not able to use the HDMI audio.
I flashed the gpu bios with the Dell bios and everything works fine now!
I have undervolted the card to from 1.10v to 0.98v in the gpu bios (I am a brave man ;-)
With the turbo fan everything is perfect (furmark 80c) but the noise is terrible (too much for me). Without any button the pc cannot handle furmark because the fan is too passive and kicks in too late.
But: you can use the Turbo Mode (cpu overclock) and then the fan is more active and can handle furmark (85c) and all games without any problems. I think this is the best solution because the Turbo Fan Button is very extreme and it doesn't scale the speed of the fan. -
My scores are similar:
3DMark2011: 3000 points (performance setting: default)
3DMark2006 (this benchmark says anything at all...): 14'000 -
Did you get the Clevo 6970m? If so then I will flash my 6970m to get the sound!
What driver are you using?
Also see my first post for power usage. -
I have the card from MXM Upgrade.
There is just one downside:
- I cannot overclock via CCC anymore (because of the Dell bios)
- But you can overclock with other tools
And I don't need to overclock at the moment with this strong card.
I ordered the Targus 180w psu now. -
I use the 11.5 ATI Mobile driver. It was important to use the official mobile version and not the desktop drivers.
-
Did you get the original vbios numbers or any numbers so that I can work out if you have a Clevo card? I wonder if MXM Upgrade sell Clevo cards?
I think its safe to flash the Clevo card with the dell bios though. -
I will check the original bios when I'm home.
It is very important to have a bootable usb stick with dos and atiflash and the original bios! Just in case.
And you need to use the "force" command ebtry because of the different manufacturer ( hardware id) -
-
So Clevo are being very naughty to their customers because they are selling laptops with HDMI without audio when they can update the vbios to allow audio!
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Uh, no??
I don't know how you got that impression.
MXM upgrade is not Clevo, and they definitely are nowhere near manufacturer status... -
I wasn't talking about MXM Upgrade.
I have managed to flash my Clevo card with the Dell bios and now I am getting audio from hdmi!!!! -
-
Thanks very much!!!
-
What are you guy's idle temps like? My 5870 is idling at 51C as I type this. I have my laptop on a desk on top of a zalman nc2000, and turbo fan is off. Just want to know what the temps are like because I'm ready to pull out this 5870 to get this laptop ready for BF3. Where can I get a Clevo card, so that I can flash the bios, or could I just buy a dell card? HDMI out is very important to me because I regularly hook up the laptop to my TV to watch videos/movies.
