As you all may know, I am in the market for a 15-16" as-close-as-possible to $1g notebook which will do SC2 on ultra everything on battlenet. Been shopping around (online and in store), only to find that I like the MSI GX640 the most. On paper it's pure genius. On the other hand, I have no idea what it looks/feels like in real life.

On Saturday, I drove to my local BestBuy to look at some real-life comps. They had a buncha Asus notebooks there, fortunately. To list them, they had the UL50VT, the G60VX, G72GX, and the G73(not yet on display). Given the specs, the G60VX and G72GX were awesome. However, when I picked them up, they seemed to be hugeeeeee. I quickly put down the G72GX because it was almost as heavy as my 1st gen ps3. The UL50VT was nice feeling, smooth, durable feeling, and the correct size. Downside? Its specs were crap, and it was pricey for what it had. But exterior-wise it's pretty nice, if that helps prospective buyers.

The G60VX was probably the best one there. 16inches, nice exterior look, and not too heavy. I even found a $13.99 targus backpack there to test its portability. With permission from the sales associate, I stuck the G60VX into the backpack. Not bad not bad I thought. It seemed like a good fit for me, and here are its dimensions: 1 5/8"H x 10 7/16"W x 14 3/4"L. It was pretty heavy, about as heavy as any college textbook, but I figure that its size was good enough for me.

So my question is: Does anyone know how the MSI GX640 compares to the Asus G60 in terms of weight and dimensions? If its less in both categories, then I think I might stop talking about the MSI for a while till the reviews come out :)

P.S. mods can I post this thread in the What notebook should I buy forums also, to illicit further discussion?
    Thanks everybody

Why not just look up the specs?
If you meant the G60JX, the specs are here, while the GX640's are on XoticPC.
    W x D x H - weight
    G60JX: 14.8" x 10.4" x 1.6" - 7.3lbs
    GX640: 14.1" x 10.24" x 1.06"-1.22" - 5.94lbs

MSI makes some pretty thin/light performance-oriented laptops. And yeah the specs speak for themselves I suppose. 1.2" on a 15" gaming laptop is sick, and I think the GX740 (17") is 1.4" which is a little bit disappointing, wish they could have shaved off a bit more on the thickness but yeah still good.

It remains to be seen how the GX640 handles heat, though. That's one of the big things I'm waiting to see covered in reviews, as well as the screen and keyboard.

Heat hasn't been an issue in the past so lets hope it's the same for the GX640.

You could probably post it in the other forum but be prepared for a lot of people to ask you to fill out the faq if you don't.

What bugs me is that the vent is on the right side and not the back... seriously who puts the vent on the most common mouse side? Makes me want to wait for the gt660

That GTX 285M is going to be real hot. The GTX 260M is already 60W TDP, I'd think the 285M is higher.

The 285m is supposedly designed to run quite cool (compared to other Nvidia cards). Should still be a lot hotter than the ATIs at load but isn't to be too crazy. Should idle at around 25W so they say

IDLE around 25W? That's insane. The ATI 5000 series cards have clock gating in them so they can actually shut down large portions of the chip and use very low power. Heck, my 5830 uses 24W at full bore running Left 4 Dead at FullHD resolutions, and the 285 can't even use that little power at idle?

Maybe I'm just confusing the 285 and 285M... 25W at idle does sound a little crazy

    260 GTX TDP- 65W
    285 M TDP- 75W
Yeah it's higher but if a laptop has a good enough cooling it's well worth it, i've only seem the 285M in CLEVO's and they are preety awesome, almost as good as 5870HD( better in some games but you lose all the goodness of DX11 :) )

So does that mean I should worry or not worry for the GX640's 1vent ? Does it even have an intake hole?
