Generally speaking, how do people feel about this card hitting 92 degrees when doing heavy gaming?

My system idles at 42 degrees when not in game and most games are between 75 and 85 depending on settings.

I've used PK3 and high quality Fujipoly pads and would like to avoid re-pasting/padding the system if these temps sound reasonable..

    Thanks!

Technically a GT780DX, but very similar layout to a GT70 (I have put GT70 parts in it - heatsink, fan)

That is hotter than it should be, the 980M core runs quite cool and mine will sit in the 70s all day even when overclocked. Not sure about yours but mine begins to throttle if i go much over 80 degrees.

Weird, I don't get any throttling (no slowdown in frames at least)

What system do you have Arrrrbol?

    @Danishblunt - don't have a pic handy but it's simply the GT70 980m heatsink (with extra CPU arm) in a GT780DX

This is odd then, usually this should easily handle the GTX 980M. I could make a custom vBios which would reduce your temps.

Thank you for your offer, I'm currently on Svet's custom vBios and I believe that he has already tweaked it in terms of temps. If I idle at 42 doesn't that mean my pasting/padding job is good? Or do I need to redo everything?

**After reading other people's experiences they are saying that they get frame drops and very bad stuttering, I have seen none of this even when it is at 92...

svets custom Bios probably made it worse. Check your wattage of the card.

    I have a Clevo P870DM-G.

Honestly, if you aren't getting throttling issues, you might be better to just leave it as it is. The cause of your high temps is more than likely using thermal pads which are too thick. If you can verify that is the issue, then you can either replace them with thinner ones, or use a copper shim on the die. That has the risk of cracking the die though, so I would just leave it as it is. If the worst happens you can replace the GPU anyway since its not BGA.

Thank you, this was my thinking exactly - since I'm not getting any negative performance effects, best to just leave it.

    What does BGA stand for?

Also, interesting theory regarding pads - I went against other's advice and used the the ultra grade Fujipoly pads - .17's i think - and while thicker they seem to be good...

Overall pleased with Svet's work - my Firestrike scores are around 8300 - good? I paired the card with an i7-2960XM and use Throttlestop to keep it at turbo when gaming

BGA = Ball Grid Array. If you have that it means the chip is soldered to the motherboard and is non replaceable.
PGA = Pin Grid Array which your 2960XM uses, and LGA = Land Grid Array which the Intel desktop CPUs use - both of them are replaceable.

Fujipoly pads seem to be good, and they will keep your VRM and VRAM cool which is more important on Maxwell GPUs.

Not sure what normal Firestrike scores are for the 980M to be honest, I can install it and give it a try if you like.

Awesome, thanks zipperi! Any opinion on hitting 92 every once in awhile? Average temps are 75-85 depending on the game. I don't experience any drops in performance..

Understandable with your 55W processor. I'm hitting occasionally about 87 with my old 3630QM but accept it as long as it hovers around 85 mostly.

I get 8818 in Firestrike, so your score is pretty good for having an older CPU.

With an overclock, this is my score:

    i have a GT70 2PC my 870M died , do i choose 980m or the 1060 card , based on better speed/heat/mod ease for the heat sink/ and power consumption. 100W vs 75W

you advice is greatly appreciated and desired.

    thank you

the GTX 1060 does require a heatsink mod. It will however run cooler and around the same speed. (in some titles it does better tho).

But keep in mind, you need to mod your heatsink.

    Correct, it'll need dremelwork.

If the standard NVIDIA drivers don't work for the GTX 1060 in your notebook, then let me know, I'll make custom ones then. Once you modded the heatsink, the installkation should be plug and play.

Windows 8.1 is the problem - try to find a modified driver or mod yourself. Laptopvideo2go. com has a modified inf just for win10x64.
