I've been looking at laptops for a while and at first I wanted a 15 incher for the portability. Then I came across the 725 which is listed as only being 1.4 inch thick and only 7 lbs.

Does anyone with this laptop find it to be pretty portable? These dimensions seem similar to the NP8660 and other powerful 15 inchers that I was looking at so this seemed like a good way to go for me.

It is fairly thin for a 17" laptop, but it is going to be wider due to the larger screen. As far as portability, that depends frequency. I have no problem throwing it into a bag and bringing it to work, but I wouldn't take it to Starbucks or anything. It definitely is not a literal laptop and is best on a desk or table.

Well I was comparing it to the NP8662 which is about 7lbs. too (according to xoticpc) but the NP8662 is 2 inches thick but only 14 inches wide as opposed to the 725 15 inches wide.

Between these two which seems to be more portable? The thickness of the NP8662 is kind of throwing me off but is being more thick and not as wide make a laptop more portable than the counter.

Well, from the measurements you gave the 725 has a lower cubic volume, but portability is pretty subjective and I think they are pretty close. I'd go with whichever has the features and price you'd prefer.

Oh, and the 725 I got came with a 9-cell battery, which adds a little less than an inch to half of the back of the machine. I'm not sure if all 725s come with 9-cells or if some have 6-cells. You might want to check if portability is your main concern.

    Thanks for the help.

I also had another question regarding the keyboard. How is it?

I read some reviews on newegg and alot of people complain the keyboard is flimsy and too cramped. Do you guys agree?

Also do the chinese letters on the keyboard get annoying or do you not notice them?

    Thanks.

Flimsy? Not at all. Mine is very sturdy.

Yes, some of the keys are small due to the full size numpad and arrows, notably the right shift, period and semicolon. This does decrease typing speed, at least until you get used to the tiny right shift, but honestly it's a gaming machine and I don't use those keys for any of the games I play.

The US version doesn't have the Chinese characters on it.

Does anyone use this laptop to write papers and things? Does the small period button just take some time to get used too or is it a real hinderence?

I'm liking pretty much everything about this laptop besides those small keys.

i work with mc word, excel, quickbooks and access on this laptop. the only people that would have a hard with those small keys are people with big or fat fingers.

I have very "neanderthal" hands. I always have....very large, thick fingers and hands and I find typing on the 1722 form factor ok.

I also find the form factor insanely light. 10lbs total is nothing, seriously. That shouldn't even be an issue carrying that around on a daily basis.

Of course if you're short/small (I define short/small under 5'10) and/or have smaller hands, it will be easier to type but the weight may be an issue (If you're able bodied, I don't see how....go pick up a 10lb dumbbell or even a 15lb....). If 10-15lbs is a burden and you're able bodied, it's time to do some core body work.

I was originally looking at the alienware m15x which is 7 pounds.. when I saw the gt725 was the same weight, I went for it.

I carry mine around the house with me.. currently working on the couch. Its normally up stairs in the computer room. Unplugging it and moving downstairs is no big deal. If you were taking it to school or something that may be a bigger hassle.

my previous laptop was 4.9 pounds and this really doesnt feel like much of a difference. And that was a 12".
