My MSI-1651 ID2 works fine with 4GB of memory for roughly 6mos, then suddenly a BSOD occurs everytime it starts Win XP! I tried downgrading the memory to 2GB and it runs fine. What gives?

    is the RAM new?
If it is not you should test it using memtest. There is a version of memtest that works under winXP. If you can't use ll 4GB at once, try teating 2GB and then the other 2GB.

Yes, they are new. I test both sticks one after the other and they work fine and no BSOD at all. Any more thoughts?

Maybe something is wrong with dual channel mode(on mobo or memory)?
Or, try to put single ram module in both slots check first and second one, maybe something wrong with memory banks.

    Try to exclude everything.

You can always go to computer shop and ask them to put another ram in, if it works ok, then you can return your faulty set, if with another ram set you will get a BSOD, you wil be sure there's something wrong in your laptop- not ram modules.

RMA your rig then (if new memory fails)
And if you runed out of warranty.....try/buy 1x4GB module becouse i assume you will not be pleased with spending another 1000 bucks on a new system

Thank you, folks, for lending me your thoughts.

In thinking about it, should I upgrade the OS from Win XP to Win Vista or Win 7 to say the least? Will this also fix the BSOD?

your hard drive or registry has issues. my guess. more like registry, need a fresh install. see what a third party defrag and see what the hdd looks like, then check the reg. if it causes it to react, then your registry probably has issues.
