I'm looking at purchasing a MSI GT75 gaming laptop and this will be used for work so I can't use a Desktop and will need the best desktop replacement laptop I can find within reason.
I plan on gaming on this and possibly using an external 240 or 144hz monitor sometimes. I will only use the computer for gaming and surfing the web, so the processor will only be beneficial for gaming.
After careful review I like the MSI GT75 Titan as it has a mechanical keyboard and all the features I want. I want to also purchase the 1080p 144hz monitor option.
I have two options and can't decide if I should spend the money. Everything is the same except for:
First option is an 2080 RTX with a I9 9850HK for $3399

Or a 2070 RTX with a i7-8750H for $2499

What should I do here? Is it worth the $900 for the 2080 and the better processor?
Or just get the 2070, and call it a day and upgrade a year or two down the road because $900 is too steep for a processor I will never see any benefit from with gaming, and the 2080 upgrade is not worth $900 over the 2070.
Or possibly just get the 2080 version because I will get most of my money back when I go to resell it in a couple of years.
Thanks for any advice or thoughts about what to buy or what you would buy.

You have to really look at your workflow needs. If you need to game/work at 4k, you will probably need a 2080. If you are looking at only keeping the system a few years and selling ittowards an upgrade, you probably are better off with the 8750H. That CPU has plenty of power for the near term.
Based on what you provided, I'd go with the GTX 2070/8750H -
1080p/144hz? Definitely get the 2070.

It's a difficult situation. High refresh rate does require a strong CPU as well as a strong GPU. If you are content with 1080p resolution and dropping settings here or there, get the 8750+2070, since the premium for the higher end CPU+GPU is quite a lot.
Just remember to do the TDP bios mod to have full CPU turbo performance when gaming to ensure consistent high framerates.
If you plan on playing 1440p resolution at 144hz, you need at least the 2080, unless again you are just going to play at low settings.custom90gt likes this. -
You’ve answered your own question. But let me help you.
NO!
If you feel the need to have the top of everything. Then do it. But if your getting 100+ FPS on games from a 2070, then why do you need a few more from a 2080? Plus paired with an i9. Just heat and throttling waiting to happen.
Think of what you can do with $900.
I wanted a 2070 max q laptop with 8750h for £1800.
In the end I bought an aw15 with 8750 and a full 1070. Sure the 2070 max q is close to a full 1080. But it cost me £900. I have some warranty outstanding and accidental damage warranty. Extras and I like you save £900.
I’ll give it a few months and wait for the 9th gen and see what other alternative laptops are out by then. And I’ll have that £900 towards it and the sale of my current laptop and I’ll prob get more for it.

its not like the 2080 is too powerful.....try getting 144fps at 1080p on ultra for most triple A games and get back at me...
