On all three of them you tried the same driver? Maybe it's something with the driver...

I wonder if nVidia somehow messed up the INF for our 9600M GTs in 179.48. I've been using 179.28 and never had this problem.

I have no idea then. I downloaded the driver straight from nVidia's website and ran the setup as-is. No tinkering with the INF or using the Have Disk method.

Im about to update my cards drivers. (have not done it yet)
Is it better to get the drivers straight from nvidia or the modified drivers from laptop2go?

well with three systems now the 179.48 work fine until you pull the plug then they are done.

179.28 is not a signed driver so i have not installed them yet. the stock msi ones are a 176.6x version. im not sure which drivers to use now. arghh

I am using the current 179.48 beta.
What i did to check my unit.
booted into win7 64bit with power attached at full res - 32bit
Pulled the power after booted, then did a normal shut down.
Rebooted without power and full res - 32bit held just fine

Once the beta driver is installed and after the first required reboot.
Boot back in on ac power, set the res if it did not by default set.
Then pull ac power and run on battery and do a normal shut-down, restart on battery.
In win7 is holds for my unit.
But this is a Vista/Win7 comparison, may or may not help
