Ok, so in the near future I'll be needing a laptop, and I had settled on the 627 due to the preformance for the size and price despite some build quality issues. But now with the introduction of the 628 I'm having second thoughts, will the 628 be any more expensive? Whats the main difference between the 160m and 9800GS, I've done searching but that has further confused me, as the 160m, 9800GTS and 9800GS seem to be almost all the same card?? Will the preformance increase be worth the wait/added price?

The GTS is a GS with higher clocks. The 160m is a die shrunk version of the card with GTS clocks, but power consumption of the GS. It will be better, but not leaps and bounds better.

It's the replacement of the GS. Not much else to it.

Yeah the GTS160M is a die shrinked 9800M GTS(same specs and clocks) so it's more or less what's to replace the 9800M GS from Nvidia's new line. It'll have a performance difference since the clocks are higher and it'll run cooler due to smaller architecture, but overall it's not groundbreaking.

So what would you say is the preformance difference between the two? I haven't been able to find preformance benchmarks for the 160m, is it anything worth waiting a month + for? Oh and has anyone heard anything about maybe improvements in build quality? I had looked but couldn't find anything.

Ah sorry I posted that last one while you were posting the one above it, so that answers preformance, any idea on a better build quality overall of the 628?

No the GT628 isn't out yet, the OP is asking if it's worth waiting.

Well I haven't heard anything about MSI changing the build quality nor even the chassis. I only saw 2 photos and the only noticeable difference is that the speaker grill is black instead of grey >.>

Other than that, the GTS 160M isn't a substantial increase over the 9800M GS(which can be overclocked to perform at the same level) and the other specs are pretty much the same IIRC.

You can always wait to see the specs and pricing.

    Sorry for necroposting.

Is the 160M GTS worth 100 USD increase over 9800M GTS?

Like, a computer with 160M GTS (otherwise similarly specified as the one with 9800M GTS) costs roughly 100 USD more then a computer with 9800M GTS here.

I know 160M GTS has similar clocks, but since the TDP of 9800M GTS is 25% higher then 160M GTS, won't it mean 160M GTS will over-clock a significant bit better?

Also, 160M GTS is new card So probably drivers from nVidia will improve it's performance?

the gts 160m seems like it should be put in 14" laptops. most new 15" gaming laptops are fitted with the gtx260m. nvidia has also released their new 40nm gts 260m which runs at 38w tdp and 96 stream processors. if msi fitted the gt628 with one of those cards, then it would be worth buying. if not, i'd just stick with a gt627, wait for the asus g51/g60 models with the gtx 260m or just buy a sager np8662.
