Hi there! I'm wondering if someone can help/clarify this for me. I have a GT70 0ND on the way and want to use it with my 120hz monitor (in 2D none of this 3D chat!). I was under the impression it was possible via the HDMI 1.4 port but details on google seem sketchy. Before i go out and by the necessary cables as my monitor only has a dvi port can anyone confirm they're able to do this? I only need 120hz for counter strike i can live with anything else in other games but for cs it makes a big difference.

    Thanks!

To my knowledge, you have HDMI cables that will advertise on the package whether they are 3D capable or not. Just shop for a typical HDMI cable without the 3D capabilities; same cable essentially, except the 3D ones have extra wiring for the 3D imagery (and thus, cost more).

The port being 3D ready won't matter if the HDMI cable isn't also.

HDMI cannot do 120hz @ 1080p. Doesn't matter if it's 1.4. (Keep in mind, blu-ray is 24fps @ 1080p, so just because it can handle 3D blu-rays does not mean it can do 3D games).

With HDMI, the max refresh rate seems to be 120hz @ 720p.

You'll need a display port to DVI converter. I've been doing a bit of research on this myself, and the Club 3D 330hz active converter seems to work. NVIDIA makes one as well, so if you have an NVIDIA you might try that as well. Depending on your rig, you may or may not run into issue with your monitor's 3D transmitter when using a display port to DVI converter, which means you might have to buy an external transmitter. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do, but at this point I'm leaning towards a 120hz monitor that either has a display port (e.g. the Samsung S27a750 or S27a950) or lacks an onboard 3D transmitter (e.g. the Asus VG27HE).

Please let us know your specs and how it turns out!

The marketing is discombobulating. 120hz monitors are not true 120hz displays to begin with. There is a lot of confusion on the HDMI standards too as far as what they will support in terms of refresh rates (some say 1.3+ has the necessary bandwidth for over 60hz, others say only DP and DVI can support higher).

I've read that the cable - in itself - is capable of 120hz, but the circuitry/port is not capable of it.
