Is the latest driver from MSI the best we can get?

I tried the latest from ATI and I can't get it to work right.

I uninstall the old driver and anything having to do with ATI, then install the latest mobility catalyst from ATI and then I have problems.

The install goes fine, drivers work, everything is silky smooth, but take it off of the power supply and it's downhill real quick.

The screen goes black, when on battery power.

I've tried setting the power settings to full performance, but no luck.

I'm current on all other drivers and bios.

Does anyone know of any tricks to make the new drivers work?

Is anyone out there running any other drivers besides MSI's with any success?

So now I'm back to the working MSI package from thier site.

I've tried a few. The only good driver I can get to work right is Omega 2.6.61 (Cat 5.8) available at

    Driverheaven.net

Edit: They work much better than the manufacturer and they have no issues with unplugging.

ok, installed the omega drivers, did some test on halflife 2 and counter strike, sorry to say I don't see any difference in performance.

was hoping to get rid of some of the jerkiness, or lag.

it might be that i'm running an mt32 thats causing it, might be the 512 of L2 thats slowing it down.

Btw had to disable tray tools, it was freezing up my system, had to hard reboot a few times once i figured out what was happening.

Well, the performance will not be too noticable, especially if you had Cat 5.12 on there before. But being able to unplug is nice. If you're having troubles with the ATI tray tools, try downloading Driver Cleaner Professional.

People often have problems when switching from ATI drivers to 3rd party mods. Run it for both ATI drivers (and any other ATI software you had) as well as for the omega drivers. Then reinstall Omega. Make sure you follow their instructions. They take a whille, but you'll be happier with the result.

the .NET Framework is required for the Tray tools. If you have not yet installed it, it will not work properly.
