I am seeing 12.7mm and 9.5mm hard drive adapters to replace my DVD drive. I am assuming its 12.7mm but want to double check. Can somebody help me?

12.7mm is the one you want for the GT series. The 9.5mm are the slim type.

Alright I'm a bit confused. My light is amber, indicating that the GPU is being used, but according to the NVIDIA activity icon, there are no programs using the GPU. I'm trying to narrow down exactly what I'm doing that causes this, as it only seems to occur when I have unplugged the HDMI cable, but I just can't figure it out.

    Any ideas?

When I bought the laptop, shipping to here at Hawaii was close to $150, so if at all, I'd do it after I move to the mainland in the future. Damn, I didn't realize you guys dropped skin prices until recently. Now it's cheaper than it was before with a skin sale!

You could check what the GPU usage percentage is on MSI Afterburner. By the amber light, I'm assuming you mean the status of the power button, in which case, mine is glowing amber while Afterburner is showing that I'm using 0% of my GPU.

Also, I should have mentioned that my laptop has both an SSD and HDD, so there was no mSATA adapter or slot that I saw when I opened up the bottom. There wouldn't happen to be an mSATA slot below the keyboard, would there?

The amber light will always come on when you plug it in.

The little box should indicate that the HDMI is causing the GPU to activate since both the DP and HDMI are powered directly from it to avoid optimus.

I know this comment is a bit old but I came across the following article that fixed my issue on a GT70 with Windows 8.0. Basically it suggests deleting your monitor driver from Device Manager and then re-installing the generic Windows one.

I've narrowed it down a bit - it doesn't have anything to do with plugging in or unplugging HDMI. It seems to be completely random - sometimes when I awaken the laptop from sleep the GPU turns on, and other times it doesn't. Restarting fixes it.

It's just a pain because when the GPU is on, the battery drains considerably faster even though it is not being used. But considering how fast this thing reboots, it's somewhat negligible.

EDIT: See this post for a fix.

Something like the klm or steam is set to the dgpu or similar by the sounds of it.

But the dGPU isn't in use before I put the laptop to sleep, it only comes on after I wake it up. I'll try ending my processes one by one next time it happens, though.

EDIT: See this post for a fix to the dGPU issue.

Does anyone know how to get the bluetooth working? It works when I reinstall the BigFoot drivers (beta or stable) but as soon as I turn off bluetooth in SCM it won't turn back on. The bluetooth drivers seem to just disappear in device manager as well.

And for anyone else having issues with 'ghost' alt-tab items (SCM and KLM) here's an AutoHotkey script to fix it:
    Code:
    #Persistent
    #SingleInstance
    #NoTrayIcon

    Process, Exist, SCM.exe
    If ErrorLevel
      WinSet, ExStyle, +0x80, ahk_pid %ErrorLevel%

    Process, Exist, KLM.exe
    If ErrorLevel
      WinSet, ExStyle, +0x80, ahk_pid %ErrorLevel%

    ExitApp
    Return

I set it to run 30 seconds after login with task scheduler.

    Here's information for GT70 2OC-008US (Canadian SKU).
    MSI Canada GT70 2OC-008US

This chassis uses 2x 2.5" SATA bay, with a bay occupied.
If you want your SSD to become the new system drive, then you should first create a set of Recovery discs using MSI BurnRecovery utility. And you should also use Windows Easy Transfer to move your data/settings onto an external HDD.
    Finally, remove the back panel.
There are 9 screws holding the back panel, simply remove them and the panel will come off. Some prying may be required with your fingers to open it.
Swap the drive, leave the HDD out for now, then use Recovery discs to restore the OS onto the new SSD, put the HDD into the 2nd bay when done.
Allow the system to boot up. Use Windows Easy Transfer to restore your data/settings to the brand new OS on the SSD.

It's automatic, so no changes is needed, unless you want to run 2x SSD as a RAID array, such as RAID 0 for extra performance.

Hey guys, trying to decide from the MSI GT70 DominatorPro-890 or the asus js model. The asus model i have the jm and cooling wise its great, but i render and edit videos alot. So was either going to get the asus with 870m in it, or get the msi with 4800 and 8gb 880m model. I have and know the asus is up to the task of 100% cpu and gpu load and stays cool. Big thing worries me about the msi is overheating. So question, will the 8gb 880m really help me out in video rendering and editing over the 870m model. And How is the heat and fan noise. Ill be using in bed next to wife alot, and cant have the huge turbo boost on as ive read its quite loud, so under 100% cpu and gpu will cooling stay good or am i gong to need the 'loud' fan boost on? And even then, will the fan boost keep up with a 100$ workload? Plus is the 880m really worth the upgrade over 870m just for rendering? I have desktop with dual 770 in sli so i game on there so gaming wise i dont care about. Please help

It's dwm.exe for anyone else having this issue. It looks to be a common issue on Win8. If your GPU is on for no reason, end the dwm.exe process and it will automatically restart and your dGPU will turn off.

EDIT: explorer.exe is also a culprit.

Hello all I am new to this forum. I started reading it a few weeks ago as I am considering buying an MSI GT60 DominatorPro-3K-475 GTX880M 8GB. I was originally considering a Ghost, GS60 with the 3K screen, but I'm worried about it having cooling issues with the case as thin as it is. Plus I wouldn't mind the additional power of the GTX 880 gpu. I think I'm going to go with just the one 128 gb ssd in the one msata slot, and adding a couple of msata ssds a month or two down the line, as it looks pretty easy to do myself on the GT60. I am considering buying it from Gentech, as I've heard good things about them from here and elsewhere. It's kinda funny, because I work for Micro Center, but we don't carry these models, at least not yet, so I can't get it from there. The other thing I was wondering about is if there is a very big difference in performance, or otherwise between the mSATA ssd in the GT60 Dominator vs. the m.2 SATA ssd in the GS60 Ghost. Thanks all in advance for any comments and advice.

You can try to tweak it with those guides but ultimately it will come down to the quality of the file. I've been happy with VLC player, with larger size higher bit rate files they can be on par with Blu Rays playing from my OPPO.

Hey everyone. New member here. I have a MSI GT70 2OC that I'm quite happy with. It came with Windows 8, however I didn't get a CD only an image made on my D:/ drive. Seeing as I'm new to laptops this is the normal way to reinstall your OS? Simply use the Image and that's as good as a clean install?

Also, my main question here was - I want to buy a monitor to use for gaming instead of my laptop screen. Will it have any heat issues if I keep the lid closed and place my new monitor ontop of it? Seeing as there are plastic bits on the special function keys on the laptop I'm afraid the plastic will melt.
I primarily use it for gaming so if anyone has any experience with keeping the lid closed and a monitor ontop of it please let me know :)

Press Windows Logo key, and search for BurnRecovery software, use it to create the factory recovery discs for future use.
You can use a monitor for gaming use and it will heat up a little with the lid closed, but it's not ridiculous so no worries.

Hey I tried downloading the new Sound Blaster Cinema AP 2 for windows 8.1 from the official msi gt60 2oc page: MSI Global GT60 2OC but once the app is installed if I click on it it says there is no supported audio device available. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling as well as reinstalling the realtek audio drivers but nothing seems to work. Can someone please advise on how to fix this or what they have done to remedy the situation? I have since reverted back to the original sound blaster cinema ap found on the drivers disk that came with the laptop.

Yes I only used the audio drivers from the msi website. The beta ones to be exact. Though someone had told me they were obsolete so I updated to the newer ones still didnt work and reverted back to the ones on the msi website but still nothing.

Hi guys. I recently bought GT70 with Windows 8.1 (i7410MQ, GTX870M). There's a program called: "SteelSeries Engine", and in the tab: "Colors" I set in "KEYBOARD ZONE SETTINGS (Layer 1)" Effect: "Audio" - but it doesn't work. The keyboard is black when the music is playing or when I'm playing games. Has anybody got the same issue or knows how to fix it?

    I've the same problem...

Well originally I had the newest driver found on the msi website which was version 6.0.1.7040 but I have since updated to a newer driver from realtek which is version 6.0.1.7183. I have tried using the nwe sound blaster cinema ap 2 with both drivers and still no luck. And if your wondering bout my microphone and speaker version they are 6.3.9600.16384.

    Hi!

Also new member, I just recieved my new GT60 2OC yesturday.
After a complicated Windows 8.1 installation time. I'm finally happy to have such a nice computer !

But -there is always a but- I'm having a microphine trouble like Joeshmoe, I can't hear anything from my internal mic.
In fact, i can hear something, but it comes from really really far far away (even with a +30db amplification)

I tried install several drivers : now I have the new realtek driver (doesn't change anything), even unmount the screen cover (to be sure nothing was obstructing the mic entrance...

    Any idea ?

Well Im sorry your having problems. My problem is actually with the new sound blaster cinema ap 2 found on the msi website and it not detecting any audio device not really with my microphone. Have you tried looking at the realtek hd audio manager for any solutions? I once had a problem with no sound coming out of my speakers and found there was a problem with them being off in the manager so check there for the problems with the microphone. Also check in the control panel under hardware and sound as well. Hope mine and yours problems get solved! :)

Really strange but my sound just stopped working after I posted. I was able to fix it though by reinstalling the realtek drivers from the msi website. So try that if nothing else works.

    Just information:
These drivers solved my problem: download.msi.com/nb_drivers/ad/audio_realtek_alc892_6.0.1.7235_0x506e885b_81700.zip

Sound Blaster Cinema AP is still not working for me, just as for @joeshmoe. It shows errors on start: "The current selected audio device is disabled, not present, not supported by the application, or has unplugged jack connections. Do you want to select another audio device now?", and then: "There is no supported device available".

Hey another quick question. I seem to be missing the device advanced setting link in realtek audio hd manager. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me? and do you know a way to fix this?

Hey folks, I need some advice. The reviews and comparisons here helped me decide on an MSI GT70-2OC (upgraded with SSD) when I replaced my old laptop back in November, and I am completely satisfied with it. I use it mostly for gaming, and over the weekend I decided to hook it up to a bigscreen LED tv to see how gaming looks. The results were... disappointing. Lots of bleed (especially with red or blue UI elements), lack of subtle shading, blurry edges. Nowhere near as good as the MSI's screen. Any suggestions on what I can hook this thing up to that will look as good as the built-in panel?
