first of all... folks... summer is coming.. pay attention to your cooling

& Confession: I used this machine as a desktop during semester since it's too heavy to carry around. unplugged battery, sat on table

The machine shut down in the middle of BF3... and won't boot up anymore... Only white power light lid up, and blowing fan upto max speed. not display on screen at all.

after about 3hrs, I manged to boot it up. with funny smell coming out from fan. it works ok for like 10 mins browsing internet and a bit of C&C alliances. But it shuts down again after I open MW3

I can't find my screw driver set atm. but soon I should find out.... my diagnose for now is local overheated result in melting down components? since it can still boot up for a while and running ok with some basic use. I will hope the mother board is not damaged. This comes to the conclusion that GFX might be fried.

For now I found this link selling gtx560m to replace the one fried. Can any1 tell me is there any place i can find a cheaper replacement. I dont mind it is 2nd hand as long as it is functioning/no damaged. Or is there any better cards can put in the same space?

Also, I have no experiences on replacing major laptop part. What else do I need/pay attention other than get a IC diamond compound? (or any better cooling method?)

    Thank you all first

    the card
MSI nVidia GeForce GTX 560M 1.5G DDR5 MXM 3.0 Discrete Graphics Card

I will try to put up a pic as soon as I found my tools

    thx again

I don't think people actually worry about what's the current season, because they have AIR CONDITIONING!

you hope the motherboard didnt fry so the gpu is the cause....? does'nt make sense, open the thing up before drawing conclusions.

May just work happily after you remove the dust.

well... i blow the fins with compressed air routinely... so I don't think it is because of dust

it's is just guessing for now. But since the gpu is much easier to replace than the entire motherboard.(I have no clue if MSI is going to repair the motherboard for me cuz I have opened up the back cover. and it seems not easy to find this mother board. it's not gonna be cheap right?) I started with looking for gpu.

If the graphics card went belly up you probably wouldn't get any picture at all or you'd get a corrupted one.

My 1st guess would be a bad cooling fan = easy to replace.

Open the bottom>take out the fan> look if the cooling fins attached to the heatpipes in front of the vents are clean.

Check that the screws that hold down the CPU an GPU heatsinks are secure.

Put the fan back in but leave the bottom cover off.

open the notebook>stand it on it's side>turn it on

Observe how the fan is spinning.

If the notebook shuts down is the fan working at the time.

Next thought, since you're operating without the battery and only on AC Power is that the notebook stops getting juice through the AC Adapter.

Bad adapter or adapter plug on the motherboard?

Does it work surfing the net on battery power?

still dont have a chance to open it up yet(mid night here).... gotta check those screw tho

    things can be sure atm

    1. fan blows full speed just like new since I forced it to be using the fan button on the power panel

    2. i tried only with battery on, battery is 90% full.( I do charge and discharge like once every month.)
same thing happened after heavy load (vid game) opened. surf on net ok, but i didn't do it for long yet.

    UPDATE:

managed to open the back cover

    1. the funny smell actually comes from the fan... but the fan is not damaged at all and work just fine

    2. the thermal compound on gfx/cpu is ok

    3. when try to boot, gfx heats up quickly tho nothing displays on the screen (the display wont even light up), cpu not heating up at all

any idea? will it be possible the CPU fried?!

So long as there is no physical damage you should be fine.

That gtx 560m is overpriced. You can get a 6970m for a little more. Any MXM 3.0 B card should work, I could sell you a 5870m for about 150$ if you're interested.

i'll probably go for 6970m since 5870m is somehow goes lower than gtx560m.

one major concern is modding heat sink and maybe a larger watt adapter.

anyways, I decide to sent it to MSI RMA 1st and probably upgrade the gfx when i get it back

btw... how about a gtx670m.... it looks similar pattern as 560m... tho need to put some thermal pad on the vram
