    Hey Guys!

I am the community specialist over here at MSI, and I wanted to let everyone know I will be on the boards here at Notebookreview from now on!

I will use this thread as an official thread for any questions, comments, concerns, suggestions, etc regarding MSI for the NBR community!

Please note: Any info under NDA/Embargo, unfortunately, will not be discussed by me. All I will respond with is a polite "i don't know what you are talking about" :hi2:

Hopefully a Mod can sticky this for me!

Hi Geno, and a very warm welcome from the community! (Huh, Geno? I was given a different name. Are you the mysterious MSI god I was told to expect?) :D

I for one, am very happy to see MSI representation, and I feel certain you will be appreciated by all. 'Hats-off' to MSI, and I applaud the blessing of your presents here! Welcome to the Party!

I have a quick question coming from the GT72 Owner's Lounge...... with the x4 M.2 SATA III daughter board, can we set-up RAID to a RAID 10 (1+0) configuration, or will this require bios mod? I assume Svet (MSI User Forum ADMIN) can this for us, if needed, right?

Also, it may be simpler to have your own thread, entitled something like, "Your Questions for the MSI god......". What do you think? Perhaps the Mod's could also make this a 'Sticky', or pin this to the top of the MSI forum.

    :)

welcome to NBR Gino! I think it is a smart move by manufacturers to engage with their user group. The people on NBR are not necessarily representative of all users but because they tend to push the envelope on what the machines can + should do they do benefit everyone, so your involvement here is much appreciated.

    Thanks Geno!

    A question about RAID configs:

My GT72 007 with 4 128gb SSDs should be arriving this week! My company IT department has to take a look at it first and upgrade it to Windows 8.1 Pro using an upgrade disc we bought with the laptop.

I was just curious if you had heard back about the RAID 10 or RAID 5 options with this laptop.

If my IT professional goes ahead and installs the 8.1 Pro upgrade on the stock RAID 0 configuration, will I be able to switch it to RAID 5 through software without having to re-install my OS?

Since I plan on exploring the RAID 5 option, I don't want to have him upgrade before I switch to RAID 5 if he is going to have to re-install the OS again after I switch to RAID 5.

Thanks for your input and glad to see you here!

Thanks Geno! Did you happen to get the technical reasoning for this...... is the daughterboard the problem, something proprietary, or does it have something to do with the bios? I am pretty sure the chipset is not a problem, and if it's the bios, a bios Mod from Svet would be a remedy.

Again, thanks for looking into this for us.

    Hey TV,

Raid 5 is definitively an option, although raid 10 is not. if you want to switch from raid 0 to raid 5, you will need to reinstall the OS. Best to configure to Raid 5 and then upgrade to 8.1!

Any chance we could get a gtx980m for us GT60 owners? The mxm 3.0b card I mean. Or is there a GT62 in plan for the future? It would be great if both answers were yes :)

    Hi.

When will the GT72 Dominator Pro be available in UK? It has been in pre-order since 1st Sept. (On Ebuyer, but listed pre-order/overdue on Saveonlaptop, Overclocker, and Scan.)

It is to my understand that GT72 is already available to US consumers way before September, when will it be actually available to other consumers (UK specifically)?

Is there any official MSI guide on how to dual boot with Linux? I have an MSI GS70 2013 and I can't seem to get it to install the bootloader without something like boot-repair. I know it may not be supported but I figured I'd ask.

    DelFang,

The GT72 Dominator Pro has already been shipped to the UK. It should already be available. Go ahead and contact some of the resellers and ask for shipment info. :)

    Spartan-S63,

We do not have any official guides on how to dual boot with Linux. Hopefully someone on the boards here can give you some more info than i can.

It appears that Pro version (880m) are already sold out the instance it became available, the non-Pro version (870m), however, is available to purchase.

Guess I need to find out the performance differences between 880m and 870m now.

Lots of users preordered them so they must had been fulfilling the preorders upon arrival.

For benchmark comparison, you can refer to notebookcheck.net.

Maybe this has already been address in the GT72 thread, but I'm too lazy to browse for it:

If Nvidia is releasing the 900M series in mid-October, could we expect the refreshed 900M GT72 models out and available immediately (by the end of October) from resellers?

Also, I'm interested in the 970M specifically. Can I expect a delay between the release of the 980M and the 970M GT72 models, as was the case with the 880M and 870M? Or will they be released together?

I also have questions regarding M.2 SSD specifically.

What is the capacity limit? I.e. can I install 4x 512GB SSD?

Can the SSDs be individually configured? For example, have 3x 512GB in RAID 5 as 1TB syatem partition, then use the pre-installed 128GB as file history cache partition?

On the side note, is there a way to make use of the empty 2.5" drive bay? So that I can install a 2.5" SSD to use as system clone drive, and use the pre-installed HDD as system backup drive.

    Thank you in advance.

Due to embargos or NDA's, Geno cannot speak to anything that has not been officially announced by MSI. If the question deals with unannounced future models or hardware, it's best not to ask.

Capacity support is virtually unlimited, because it really depends on what the market can offer.
Yes, you can configure them as JBOD mode aka AHCI. You can create a 3-drive array out of 4 disks.
You can use a standard 2.5" SATA type SSD in the secondary bay.

    Thank you for the reply.

As regarding to the 2.5" drive bay, that wasn't what I mean. What I meant to say is that: there are space for 2x 2.5" hard drive, but with only 1 connector. Is there a way to install 2 2.5" hard drive? So the final specs of storage are: 4x M.2 SSDs, 1x 2.5" SSD, AND 1x 2.5 HDD.

Hope I make it clearer this time.

    DelFang,

I just checked with my tech guy and this setup: 4x M.2 SSDs, 1x 2.5" SSD, AND 1x 2.5 HDD will not be possible for the GT72 dominator pro.

The only way to do so would be using the optical drive bay, so you would forgoe your dvd/bluray for an additional 2.5 inch hdd. That way you can have 4x m.2 ssds, and 2x 2.5 inch whatever you wish. As far as I know, that is the only way.

Then it seemed wasteful to have the space for 2 hard drive but can only utilize one.

You can, but it has to be done this way by sacrificing your optical drive.
The M.2 bay is there to stay and you can't change it at all therefore the only way to do 2x 2.5" is to remove the optical drive and install a HDD/SSD caddy then in that case you will have 4x M.2 + 2x 2.5".

Note: Just noticed that ryzeki has answered you, so yeah it is the only way.

Glad to be of service! :D Thanks for clarifying it though!

Well, previous models used to have dual 2.5 bays for HDDs, but to be honest, one bay and one adapter with multi m.2 or msata is much better. SSDs are becoming increasingly common even in miniature formats now, and their prices are often similar to their 2.5 inch parts. I'd much rather stick in 4 x 512GB drives in there and if I need to, because for laptop, the best we can hope is 2TB mechanical drives or 1TB SSD. I am sure 1TB m.2 SSDs are coming soon, rendering the 2.5 bay rather useless and more like a legacy affair for mechanical cheaper drives.
