I would like to buy my first gaming laptop but as I read the reviews I am concerned about few things. So please help me to choose between these two laptops:

    MSI GE60-2PE
    CPU: i7-4700MQ
    RAM: 8GB
    GPU: GTX860M 2GB
    HDD: 1TB 7200rpm
    OS: Win 8.1

PS: I would buy mSata Samsung EVO 250GB into this one.

    Price: 1 220€

    or

    MSI GS60-2PC
    CPU: i7-4700MQ
    RAM: 8GB
    GPU: GTX860M 2GB
    HDD: 1TB 7200rpm
    OS: none

PS: I can't buy my lovely Samsung EVO into this because there's no EVO in m.2 mSata format :(( So I have to choose Crucial M550 256GB :/

    Price: 1 180€

I had a chance to see both of them, not in action so I cant compare temps and loudness :/
And also i dont know if it was just because of light in the showroom but GS60s backliting looked like it was just from the bottom of the keys not through them. Backliting in GE60 was just awesoooooooome. Can anyone confirm this please?
And I also heard that GS60s battery is being drained while gaming :((

Touchpad in GS60 was nice and smooth. But the one in GE60 was like "Let's play Tom and Jerry" - so it jumped sometimes to random position :/ .

Can anyone help me to choose and why would he choose that? :) Thanks! And also something about performance would be also nice, because I saw and heard that Kepler is a little bit stronger than new Maxwell GPU :/

I don't know much about these two laptops since I didn't like MSI, but about the two GPU Maxwell GTX860M is much better than Kepler one for its slightly better performance, cooler temperature and lower power consumption. Cooler temperature also leads to better overclocking potential thus even better performance (Refer to "GTX 860M is a beast" thread in the forum).

Whoever told you that Kepler is stronger than Maxwell must be dreaming or have no idea what's he talking about because Maxwell is superior to Kepler in any aspect (as in GTX860M).

well now as i was reading another forum it was just because Kepler had higher frequencies. So I admit I wrote a stupid thing.

Is there anyone who can normally recommend me one of these laptops ? With a small review why would he choose that or why he already chose "that" model. Thanks :)

    Hey Charlie,

As a former owner of the GE60 Apache Pro -- I can probably help you decide. While the GE60 Apache Pro was an extravagant performer in itself, it had two major shortcomings that made me return it; battery life and heat management. Both CPU and GPU are handled by a single fan, so it was running warm on a consistent basis. GPU always peaked at 92-93 degrees C for me while CPU was a touch cooler @ 88-90. This was also with an IC Diamond repaste.

The upper left hand corner of the keyboard near the ASWD region also became uncomfortably hot, making it a bit hard to play FPS games on. But this is always mitigated by external solutions.

Battery life is another shortcoming of this notebook for me: it's always lasted 2.5 hrs to 3 hrs. That's while its idling as well. While it is enough to go from building to building, if you're always on the go, you might want to look elsewhere.

If you can look past these two issues, then this notebook is FANTASTIC. It performed admirably in most visually intensive games on moderate-to-high settings. Skyrim, Titanfall and even The Witcher 2 were close to maxed settings and performed very well. The build quality is also very good with its brushed aluminum lid and body construction, flex was minimal on the keyboard and screen when opening. Hard drive, while mechanical, still boasted decent read/write speeds with two available MSATA ports for your SSDs.

Again, for the price, it's a great notebook. But, be wary of its heating and battery "issues"

This is my take on the GE60 as a previous owner.

Well, i can comment from the GS60 side! i went for the pro version. so 2.5ghz processor, GTX870m and 16Gb RAM with Raid SSD. You pay around £300 more for the GS over the GE due to the thin nature of it!

It has 2 fans, one for the CPU, one for the GPU. Under normal usage, its quiet. Under full load its louder. still more of a whoosh than a whir, but its doing a lot of work to cool the thing down. The underside gets crazy hot! The top gets warm. But then this is no different to my old alienware m14x. The selling points are obvious! 21mm thin! thats half the thickness and 2/3rd the weight of my alienware m14x. despite being much faster, and having a bigger screen!

Battery life is around 4 hours with light use on 40% brightness, which is plenty for me! The battery CAN be drained during game play while attached to AC. its called Hybrid Power. It gives it more power if it needs by draining the battery down to a maximum of 30C. This doesnt happen in normal gaming, so i assume its for overclocking. The keys are definately under lit. In a dark room, you can see the letters, but ordinarily you'd be hard pressed to notice the letters are lit. the under lighting however is very good. I like the fade from 2 colours it can do.

There is no optical drive, but i havent found myself needing one tbh. most of my games are via steam or origin these days! But i bought a DVD rewriter anyway. £15 samsung one, and its only 20mm thin. so the same as the laptop!

I'm sure with either, you'd be happy! I just love the portability of the GS series! And wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone look for a light gaming laptop! Yes it can be a bit loud under gaming usage, yes it can get mighty hot. But i'm happy to see past those by turning the volume up and game on a table! (where i can use a proper gaming mouse then too!)

    Thanks for the review :)

I've used my Sony Blu-Ray drive for about 5times since i have it, it's ca 2-3years ... so I don't think I'll need any DVD drive ... if yes then i would use the one in PC

I was considering also Y50 but it has a really poor display so I am going for GS60 :) but i think i'll wait for a while for a price drop ... if it will be 50-100€ cheaper it would be perfect :3
